How is this index calculated? Is it pluralism? Because then China would be more “free” than the US.

According to their own biaises China has absolute zero pluralism because it's a "one party state"

US - 2 parties - democracy

Russia - 8 parties - dictatorship

I don’t know, other than they start with their conclusion and work backward to construct metrics to fit it. Hannah Arendt would be proud.
