Former Canadian diplomat Colin Robertson said that when diplomats go to observe a combat area, their safety is not guaranteed.

"Things happen which certainly are not probably intentional on the part of the Israeli government, but these things have happened in the past. We've had Canadian observers killed, for example, when we were doing peace monitoring in Vietnam and in other situations," he said.

Fuck off Colin, fuck you

I think at this point, the hasbara and apologia looks more and more out of touch with reality and it has the opposite effect of its intent. I think the more we see it, the less it works. Totally anecdotal assesment of the process, but the shift in opinions is factual.

[–] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 22 points 1 month ago

Definitely. In the past I hesitated to express my thoughts that Israel is a settler colonial apartheid state and now it's a very prominent and accepted viewpoint.

Sure there's a lot of pushback, still, but it's not an unspeakable accusation like it used to feel like. Even "centrist" eyes can see this viewpoint now

Fucking Colin Robertson 😬

I read that in Nandor's voice from What we do in the Shadows.

Kick their ambassador out and bring home ours.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Formally summoning the ambassador is the first step in that process.

Earlier this week, Carney joined British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron in threatening to impose sanctions on Israel in response to its "denial of essential humanitarian assistance" in Gaza.

The Western leaders' letter followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying his country would control Gaza despite mounting international pressure to lift a blockade on aid supplies that left the enclave on the brink of famine.

Netanyahu condemned the joint statement in a social media post and called it "a huge prize for the genocidal attack on Israel on October 7," referring to Hamas's attack against Israel in 2023 which ignited the war in Gaza

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also took aim at Carney's joint statement.

"The Hamas terrorists have just thanked Mark Carney for his recent statement on Israel," he posted online Tuesday.

The IDF said it "regrets the inconvenience caused."

I betcha they are also regretful of the inconvenience caused by killing World Kitchen Aid workers and destroying a Canadian-made water well. The inconvenience of it.

[–] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 month ago

I'm sorry that you find our genocide offensive

The cognitive dissonance here in the US is intense, but the damn has broke, the only way this would have worked out was if the silencing of voices was endlessly exhaustive and complete in the US but also among its critical allies (not that it means shit but personally I have always considered Canada to be a critical ally, our economies and history are, were? deeply intertwined for one) , even tiny "meaningless" nerdy Fediverse communities evading enforced destruction of empathy in a culture pose a beautifully existential threat to the continuation of the machines and more importantly narratives of senseless, indiscriminate violence.

This is one of those communities.

Isn't that a very clear declaration of war?

Soldiers shooting at civilian representatives of other countries is both war crime and a war.

Time for Canada to request a clear explanation and draft a notice about trade and sanctions.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 1 month ago

No, it's very definitely not a declaration of war to shoot near or at diplomats.

There is no place in war for this sort of intimidation. What you're referring to is a war crime.

It is not an act of war.

I mean, they attacked a warship owned by the world's greatest superpower and then only after being caught they gave a laughable explanation causing the superpower to say "We accept your apology but not your explanation" with no further action taken. How Israel continues to get away with it is a question for the ages.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

That tracks.

Evict Zionist scum from East Palestine.

Israel hasn't existed in thousands of years. Time for the world to get over it.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 1 month ago

Why not evict them from all of Palestine? From the river to the sea?

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 4 points 1 month ago

Israel had a long history of attacking foreign diplomats.

In 1948 they assassinated a UN mediator from Sweden

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folke_Bernadotte

Since the very beginning, up until today, they saw no issue with murdering international peace keepers who might be sympathetic to the people who owned the land that they wanted to steal.
