Congrats OP! That's really something!
For those of you still on the journey, know that you can quit individual google services. For example you can quit Gmail, but keep Youtube etc. This would also allow you to keep play store.
Thanks! I have also ditched all Microsoft services as well as windows, I also installed a custom ROM on my phone with no gapps. Every piece of software I use is foss!
What country are you in, and what type of phone/OS did you use?
Also, congrats!
I live in Greece. I have a Mi 11 Lite 5G with CrDroid 11.5 without google services
Congrats! That what I strive for
Congratulations! That must have been quite the journey. I am getting close, but I still need to figure out a calendar service that I am happy with that works with my family and it will be hard curb my YouTube addiction.
for calender you can try tuta calender and you can watch most vids using invidious or newpipe
Thanks, good luck!
Noice!
This is the first thing I see when logging into Lemmy, made me pause for a second or two.
Thanks!
Wow, that's courageous, well done. I'm envious. I'm still battling with the sunk-cost fallacy mostly related to my youtube account. My gmail just redirects to my new mail address currently, so that's sort of sorted until I've gone through 20 years of created accounts that are linked to it.
That's part of my issue. I'm a former content creator and still want to keep the videos from those years up and available. I don't really use subscriptions or anything though so I can browse without an account.
I closed out 2 google accounts entirely this month, and just about finishing migrating various accounts to use my new tuta email. I'm still keeping my last 2 accounts up just in case (I've had cases where very important emails sent from tuta were getting filtered by the recipient, but gmail seemed fine). But on those two accounts, I've totally purged all existing emails, emptied Drive, etc. I'm also on Fi as it's basically the only remotely affordable mobile plan around here. So I'm about as distanced as I can get at this point, but not entirely off yet.
Thanks! Even if you can't detach completely the fact that you don't accept it and try to escape is a big step forward that many don't take.
Congrats ! and enjoy your freedom
Thanks
Congratulations. I'm about 50% the way there. Looking forward to the day I see this screen.
Congrats
best thing ever done! bravo!
Thank you! I totally agree. Im sick of these large companies.
exactly👏
Very nice. Congrats!
Thanks mate
I recently did this for one of my accounts. It was quite a few years old, but it still hurt to remove it. Backed up all old photos and said goodbye. I still have a Gmail account, but I hope to transition fully to Proton soon. Congrats, OP!
Thank you!
What about Google Play?
Aurora store
You always have fdroid and if you need somthing aurora store is here
I've been gradually working my way towards this. Recently I switched to GrapheneOS and signed up for Tuta mail. Next step is to build a NAS and set up immich.
Good luck!
Thanks! And congrats on your escape
Congratulations !
Thanks!
👏 Congrats!
Thank you!
Congrats! How many places you had to change login email?
Way too many 😄
Congrats!
The only thing that's stopping me from doing the same are:
- some email redirects (for some reason, I can't update the emails on those services)
- a shonen jump subscription (for some reason, there is no option to subscribe to them directly so I have to do it through google play store 🙄)
I did move on from Youtube however, by moving my subscriptions to an RSS feed and storing my "watch later" links using Linkding (a bookmark manager). I sort of alluded to this in a recent comment: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/19041626
I'm curious what set of tools and services you settled on using instead.
planning to setup immich once my PC is repaired to ditch ente
Thanks.
Did it last week myself! Feels pretty good eh?
Yep!
