people who are definitely not ashamed

[–] QuietCupcake@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago

They're not though! At all! This is about protecting themselves from reprisal, not shame.

Totally normal thing for mass murderers to do

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 51 points 1 week ago (3 children)

This doesn't seem real to me. At that point, why take pictures at all?

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 44 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah if this is true the IDF just became the most infiltratible military on earth

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago

Surely they still use their real faces on their security badges, right?

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago

Now you're gonna laugh, but I found out that here in the Middle East it used to be some women took their ID photos.....while wearing face veils; it's no longer legal for immediately obvious reasons

I'm guessing this is supposed to be an opsec thing but it also reeks like a liberal protest thing internet-delenda-est

Ironically in Israel, even this minor act would probably face major backlash

I've said this before but 'leftist' is literally a pejorative in Israel

It's a perjorative in every Western country, Israel is just the most openly fascist

This is the start of what will become a wider trend of obscuring identifying features for military and law enforcement personnel. I am reminded of this cautionary video, which is ever more relevant given what's happening in Ukraine: https://youtu.be/O-2tpwW0kmU

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

what specifically is happening in Ukraine re: this?

Automated attack drones deployed in swarms. Self piloting, automatic targeting, both kamikazi style and remote payload delivery. Publicly they claim they still require human target confirmation before finalizing the strike, but given how far jamming has come it is clear that full self directed lethal strike is inevitable if not already in play.

Damn, it's like the boomerang of imperialism will swing back to the imperial core or something, that's wild.

"Oh no, they killed the democrats"

Wow even over the course of like 5 minutes scifi always ruins its premise with cornball shit

faceless Zionazi hordes moment

[–] GnastyGnuts@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago

I can see how this would maybe help them avoid legal prosecution, but I just assume every israeli is an evil war-criminal child-killing sexual predator demon-creature unless I am given good reason to believe otherwise.

So the social ostracism of being an israeli still remains, as does the possibility of orchestrating Fresh (1994)-style schemes against them.

resistance fighters DO target IOF soldiers who are known to have commit (more egregious than normal) atrocities

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

My theory is that, other benefits (international courts, identification on the street) aside, it makes it harder for Hamas to release the identities of dead Zionists. They would use these photos in videos of sniping operations at times.

I think it would have a profound effect being a settler and seeing a blurry video suddenly go "oh this your your neighbour/brother/son/cousin btw lol" as they get 🔻🔻🔻. Those pseudoanonymous blurs suddenly distinct human beings who their families and communities recognise being liquidated like the cowards they are.

Plus, the state will struggle to hide its casualty numbers if Hamas were to continue identifying their targets.
