Explanation: In the early 1970s, the Conservative government of the UK ended free milk for schoolchildren under the lead of their education minister. Kicking off a career of petty harassment towards the impoverished and vulnerable with a startling opening salvo, Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher, would later go on to become a long-serving British Prime Minister on the strength of her small-minded cruelty and hatred of the poor.

HOWEVER

Those British children don't know what TRUE loss is, unlike French children, who were no longer served wine in schools by order of the French Ministry of Health from 1956 onwards. 😭

Thanks, now I’ve got

Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher!

Stuck in my brain like some kind of children’s rhyme

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

During her diabolically evil reign as the British PM some of the press dubbed her "thatcher thatcher, Milk Snatcher".
Which is far more polite than she ever deserved.

It was generally Maggie Thatcher the milk snachter as the rhyme.

But most importantly, mines.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/french-children-wine-at-school/

at that time, it was a common practice to see children consuming wine. Parents usually give a flask of wine mixed with water to their children when they go to school.

Damn I wish my parents were this cool

This some sort of clean water concern?

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 13 hours ago

No, just French.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, if you don't hydrate and get enough electrolytes and wine you lose the ability to be a snobby french. Happened to my cousin.

As you’re clearly an expert, is there a cig ration?

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

3 per day, minimum. Tho ideally you should hit 7.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

This daily cig ration increases in an easterly direction. Romanian models receive about 18 per day.

That's why you should drink Glucozade Port!

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know this argument for the middle ages but not the 1950s! I wasn't alive in either so what do I know

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 3 points 14 hours ago

And in the Middle Ages they’d be drinking small beer, which is 0.5-3%.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Having now read the article, there is no mention of illness concern, only “acclimating” the kids to wine

Maybe they banned the practice to discourage watering wine.

What's that? An excuse to post one of my favourite videos? Don't mind if I do!

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago
