The French Wars of Religion (1562-1598) were a series of eight conflicts between Protestant and Catholic factions in France lasting 36 years, The fighting ended in 1598 when Henry of Navarre, who had converted to Catholicism in 1593, was proclaimed Henry IV of France and issued the Edict of Nantes, which granted substantial rights and freedoms to the Huguenots. However, Catholics continued to have a hostile opinion of Protestants in general and of Henry, and his assassination in 1610 triggered a fresh round of Huguenot rebellions in the 1620s.

Tensions had been rising between Protestants and Catholics since 1534 but the religious and political situation worsened after Henry II (r. 1547-1559) died from an injury. His son, Francois II (Francis II, r. 1559-1560), crowned king at the age of 15, had been married to Mary, Queen of Scots (l. 1542-1587) who was the niece of Francis, Duke of Guise (l. 1519-1563) and his brother Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (l. 1524-1574). Although Francis II was of age to rule on his own, his mother, Catherine de ‘Medici (l. 1519-1589) encouraged the Guise brothers to assume control as Francis II was inexperienced and sickly.

The House of Guise, devoutly Catholic, then exercised the power behind the throne and were hostile to the efforts of the Huguenots (French Protestants) who were advancing their vision in France. In March 1560, a group of Huguenots tried to kidnap Francis II to remove him from the influence of the Guise brothers. The plot, known as the Amboise Conspiracy, was discovered and anyone thought to be involved, as well as over 1,000 other Huguenots, were executed. In retaliation, Huguenots began vandalizing Catholic churches and rising tensions led to the Massacre of Vassy in March of 1562, in which Catholics killed more Protestants, starting the first war.

Conflict continued, with periods of armed peace between hostilities, until 1598 when King Henry IV, recognizing that France would never accept a Protestant king, converted to Catholicism (allegedly, with the famous line, “Paris is well worth a Mass”). His Edict of Nantes (1598), granting rights to Protestants in France while maintaining Catholic sovereignty, ended the French Wars of Religion (which had cost approximately 4 million lives) but did not address the underlying tensions which continued to erupt throughout the next century.

Meduza, a Russian publication based in Latvia, has geolocated the filming location of the reported arrest of one of the suspects, confirming claims by Russian state officials that the suspects were headed for Ukraine after the attack.

Hmm

I can only remember what colors have which names because my mom was obsessed with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it was the only tape we had in the car so we played it on loop every time we drove somewhere. We went on 20+ hour drive vacations every summer. So now my brain is seared with the knowledge that....

red, yellow, green, brown, scarlet, black, ochre, peach, ruby, olive, violet, fawn, lilac, gold, chocolate, mauve, cream, crimson, silver, rose, azure, lemon, russet, grey, purple, white, pink, orange, red, yellow, green, brown and blue

... are colors, and I know what they look like. Also that when Joseph tried it on, he knew his sheepskin days were gone.

But there's no way we're autistic. Right, Mom?

Pretending I'm attending the office by keeping my teams background on, sipping from a travel bottle, and occasionally turning my head to the side and nodding.

I loathe the necessity of logging off in a world where a load of things far more important than my own life (which I never liked or cared about all that much anyway) are going on

The new episode of Shogun has a scene where the subtitles say "[Mariko praying in Japanese]", but she is very clearly praying in Latin, how did these translators think "Pater Noster" is Japanese? She is Catholic, of course she is using Latin.

The on average cheapest computer parts website in my country is so fucking shady with their marketing. They raised the price of a 7800X3D by 10% and at the same time they added the tag EASTER DEAL. Previously they've put SALE tags on things without lowering the price (I reported them for that but ofc nothing came of it)

AMLO is reportedly negotiating a secret deal with the Trump campaign in which Mexico will agree to pay for The Wall in return for Trump forcing CONCACAF to let Mexico fans chant slurs again.

I find that if I tell people I studied math physics everyone has opinions about string theory but no one has opinions on the soliton resolution conjecture. At least not ones they'll voice because of cancel culture. Only brave truth-tellers dare ask questions like does a global solution of the nonlinear Schödinger equation, for generic initial data, eventually resolve into a radiation component that disperses like a linear solution, plus a localized component that behaves like a soliton or multi-soliton solution?

My current thinking is that three body problem isn't really that deep and people have read a great deal in to a pretty mid sci fi story that just isn't there.

I was just browsing through the channels, when I spotted this British reality TV show called Millionaire Holiday Home Swap, which follows elite members of a luxury home exchange club, as they swap their second homes. I saw one of them whine about how the kitchen drawers aren't push-to-touch, unlike the ones in their expensive modern kitchen. kombucha-disgust Thanks, ukkk
