Hi everyone,

After Apple made it possible to support VPNs on Apple TV, you’ve made it clear that you would like to see support for Proton VPN.

After announcing that it would be available this summer and publishing the source code in September, it took a bit of time to get through Apple’s review process, but we’re happy to share that it is now available!

With Apple TV and Proton VPN, you can now stream your favorite shows, films, and sporting events on your big-screen TV in full 4K from over 100 servers via your Apple TV, no matter where you are: protonvpn.com/download-appletv

Proton VPN is now available on tvOS!

See our streaming guide for more information: https://protonvpn.com/support/streaming-guide/

Proton VPN is now available across the Apple ecosystem on iOS, macOS, iPadOS, Apple Vision Pro, and tvOS. Let us know what you think!

Hi everyone,

We've heard your requests and are excited to announce that FIDO2 support is now live for all Proton mobile apps! This means you can use security keys like YubiKey to add a layer of phishing-resistant protection to your account. Here’s how to add a security key to your account using the web app:

https://proton.me/support/2fa-security-key

After adding security keys, you can use them to authenticate on mobile when signing into all Proton mobile apps.

Thank you to everyone who's been asking for this feature. We're always working to make Proton more secure and user-friendly, and your feedback is invaluable in helping us get there.

What's next?

Soon, we'll provide the option to disable the Authenticator App for those with registered security keys, so stay tuned!

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Sharing Proton Docs (lemmy.world)

Is it possible to share a proton doc to someone without an account?

According to this help page, there should be a public link creator. When I open the dialog this option does not appear.

Am I missing something, or is this possibly related to the fact that the document was created in proton?

The Google Play Store version of Proton VPN (not the F-Droid or GitHub versions (unless they have been updated the last few weeks)) allows people to use Proton VPN as a 'Guest', i.e. without logging into a Proton account. The average user might think, because they have not provided an email address or any other details whatsoever, that using Proton VPN as a Guest gives them an additional layer of anonymity.

Would they be correct?

Or am I right in thinking that when a person downloads the VPN app from the Play Store, their Gmail address (logged into the Google Play Store) is shared with Proton, and because Proton receives this identifiable information from Google it is why Proton allows 'Guest' usage on the Play Store version and not on the FOSS versions of the app?

If yes, does Proton store these Gmail addresses and are therefore able to provide them to Swiss authorities if demanded?

Proton VPN says they are a "no-logs VPN service", but their definition of what that is leaves me with a few questions. They say "we keep no session usage logs" of which websites people visit, or their actual IP address, but does this mean the data they have is only cleared once the session ends? Do they not need an identifier to know where to send data whilst the VPN is in use? What if the user does not switch off their VPN - can Proton what websites a specific Google 'Guest' user is visiting whilst they are in a session?

Although a user logged in with a Proton account would have peace of mind that some or all their other data (emails, files, etc) is E2EE and therefore safe, if the the user is a 'Guest' and Proton stores their Gmail address, the user is much more likely to be identified and their Google data accessed by authorities.

If on a single device the user is logged into their Proton account in their browser or other Proton apps but use the VPN as a Guest because they think it would make them less identifiable, could Proton, or Swiss or foreign authorities connect the Proton account with the VPN usage (specifically, the Gmail account if nothing else)?

All that is to ask, are 'Guests' any more or less 'anonymous' than Proton VPN users who log in with their Proton account?

I’ve been looking into the student discount offered by Proton. I’ve tried going through student beans and I never seen uBlock freak out as much as it has so I am not touching any of those links is there a (safe) way to get the discount and is it even still offered? Thanks for the help

Can someone see my email if I publicly share the proton drive file? I tested this, and I can't see the email, but I still want to confirm this with the community since it's not stated anywhere.

Proton has been uploading short 1.5 minute videos on their channel, and I feel like they lack substance and don't go over any of the topics meaningfully. Do you see this format resonating with the public? Should they be making more in-depth videos?

I'm guessing the demographic that follows Naomi Brockwell TV, for example, doesn't intersect much with the ones that might watch those shorts

can you make the VPN app integrate with the app indicator?

also, add a session timer or show the connection establish time?

When proton first added docs you could only edit them through a browser. I just noticed today that they added it to the android app!

i have a custom domain witg catch all setup on protonmail. Is there a way to send every email that is sent to a specific address to spam always?

i.e. if I gave a company A the email "A@domain.tdl" and no longer want any emails from them, or anyone with who knows that specific email, how would I go about this? Thanks!

I used to be a command line interface (CLI) user and still prefer it, but the graphical user interface (GUI) app has been good—it's stable and fast with WireGuard.

It will reconnect if the connection drops, and the kill switch is functioning. If you're using the v3 CLI, you should check out the new GUI.

A big thank you to the dev

until there is a cli, i will using the gui

I downloaded ProtonVPN (5.5.68.0) a few months ago via the Google Play Store and have been happily using it ‘anonymously’ as a Guest with no problem. I recently purchased a new Android device and this time I chose to download the same VPN (5.5.68.0) via F-Droid to maintain some privacy. However, there appears to be no option in the FOSS version of the app to use Proton VPN as a guest - I am told I have to sign-up with an actual email address.

For a company claiming they are "Empowering you to choose a better internet where privacy is the default. Protect yourself online with... Proton VPN" (look to the right of this page), this decision astounds me. Assuming the error is not on my part, why is the purported FOSS version on F-Droid forcing users to give identifiable information (even if it’s only an email address and password), but the Google Android version does not?

Tiling (r.nf)

When protonvpn is in tiling mode, it leaves a lot of unused space

On desktop, the submit a post page will load indefinitely without proceeding when connected with Proton. On mobile (using Boost for Lemmy), I always get "an unknown error occurred" when submitting anything to Lemmy. Anyone else having this issue?

The new "Omnibus" law in italy tries to block piracy by basically creating a situation in which you will face jail time if you get caught watching an illegal streaming (or your IP does) and ISP and IP providers (they name VPN and DNS services) will face jail time too if they don't notify the authorities of "illegal activity" done by their users.

E.g. if I watch a soccer streaming from a pirate site, apparently, my VPN provider (in this case, Proton) will have to notify the authorities that I am watching that pirated content.

This is madness in so many ways, starting by the fact that the law implies that both my ISP and my VPN provider must spy my traffic to see if I am watching any illegal content.

I wanted to know if Proton has anything to say about all of this for their Italian customers. How are you guys going to face this? Will you simply stop providing the service? Will you ignore the law because you are not an italian company? Or will you spy our traffic to see if we are watching a soccer game?

I'm quite worried right now about the implications of this law to my privacy. Not because I pirate content but because the punishement for those who don't notify the authorities means that to avoid legal problems, services like Proton will have to actually read our traffic.

I have the "HOLIDAYS" calendar loaded for the US in the Proton Calendar app but Oct 14, Columbus Day isn't included. I know it's a contentious "holiday" but it's still listed as a Federal Holiday and should be included.
