Remember when fist bumps weren't quite a regular thing yet and Fox New accused Barack and Michelle Obama of doing a "terrorist fist jab"?

Haha, there was that, the dijon mustard thing, and of course the tan suit.

Pretty much whenever they were running stories like that, I felt pretty confident that everything was ok.

I miss when that stuff was the extremes of petty arguments between GOP and DNC voters/media.

"A tan suit!? How unprofessional!"

Absolutely no logic to it they just wanted any reason to hate on the guy. I wasn't an Obama voter in 08/12 but even I was like "who the hell cares? The guy looks sharp as hell in that suit". Perfectly fitted with a modern cut while every GOP candidate at the time looked like they were wearing an oversized boxy suit Al Capone would have worn in the 1920s. Probably taking out their frustrations with their own tailors on Obama.

Flag pins. Everyone forgets the flag pins.

They weren't a thing politicians typically wore before 9/11. Everyone had to after. Obama showed up once without one and Fox News cried bloody murder. He never was seen without one after, at least not in any official capacity.

That was the last time I remember anyone pushing back on that ridiculous faux-patriotism, and it was over before it began.

They also played the 'uppity n***r' angle when he dared to put his feet up on the... whatever the desk in the oval office is named.

Had a whole segment about how disrespectful, unhygenic, unprecedented this was... took a few days for people to find pictures of basically every President in the past 50 years doing the same thing.

Ah those were the days.

Glenn Beck watched some InfoWars streams and thought "I can just tone this down a bit and become famous" and then did that on Fox for a few years... Ann Coulter was still getting air time... Hannity still had Colmes as a punching bag...

I don't remember them not being a common thing at that period of time, but I do believe you that fox news said that about them. Fist bumps even among white folk have been a common thing for several decades, and even longer for black folk.

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago

Yeah, I watched a YouTube video from 16 years ago where they called out that people had been doing fist bumps for at least a decade at that point. Personally I don't remember when I first did a "pound". I don't think it was common when I was in highschool in the 90s, but I was certainly aware of it not being a terrorist fist jab in 2008.

[-] TheFriar@lemm.ee 5 points 4 months ago

I mean…is “terrorist fist jab” even a thing? This was the tea party, still increasingly blatant yet not totally mask-off dogwhistle racism era. They knew there was no such thing. We knew there was no such thing. It’s just that their rabid fan base would take that ball and run with it because this was the era of birtherism, “secret muslim” accusations, etc.

[-] jettrscga@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Oh boy, I missed that one.

"A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab? The gesture everyone seems to interpret differently," said Hill in her show. "We'll show you some interesting body communication and find out what it really says."

From this explanation of it

[-] nifty@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I missed it too, apparently

[-] Mannimarco@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Fuck me, yes I remember that was hilarious

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 months ago

I dunno. Fist bumps had been common for a long time prior to that. I guess it all depends on your age group and where you were living.
