Reddit Migration

Wanted to say it’s pretty cool to see how fast this place has grown in just the past few days and it’s starting to really feel like what Reddit used to be in the good ol days.

Poll: What should be the final name for the #Kmoon app for #kbin and #lemmy? Below some suggestions from the community.

I know Kbin will grow in time but I miss how huge Reddit was.

Or the fediverse in general.

I wanted to ask everyone their personal least favorite communities on reddit.

Whic subreddits do you absolutely not (personally of course) want to see recreated as magazines here on kbin, or as fediverse communities in general?

My pet peeve is CMV. I always felt while the idea seemed doable on the surface, the implementation within that particular subreddit with the delta system, the requirement for the top level comments to oppose the OP even if the "view" is an established expert consensus on something like climate change made it impossible to have meaningful conversations.

I haven't checked if we have a CMV magazine here, but as soon as I see one, I know I'm blocking it.

Reddit can restore your deleted posts. However, if people flood them with GDPR / CCPA delete requests, they may become liable for lawsuits if they don't comply.

It sounds like their current policy is to not delete your posts even when deleting your account, but there may be grounds for legal action here.

If you're like me, you have a habit of typing reddit.com whenever you have some time to kill at a computer.

Kicking habits takes time, so as you develop a new habit of typing kbin.social (or lemmy.world or whatever the case may be), consider a browser extension that blocks or redirects traffic from reddit to your desired new social media destination.

For Firefox, I have found these to be helpful over the last week:

r/funny should be proud. They sat in the crosshairs for longer than anyone thought they would. I hope they, and all the other subs pressured into going restricted or public, continue to show their support in some unique way. Some ideas:

• Include kbin/lemmy equivalent magazines in the banner and a sticky post. Sticky an autocomment on every post with fediverse info.

• Only use the standard mod tools and halve your time commitment. "We went back to using the tools they gave us and this is how it will be from now on. Welcome to the new Reddit you guys chose by not supporting the blackout!"

• Mark the sub NSFW. Realistically, there's rarely a reason anyone in an office should be on Reddit. This should also make the sub unavailable for mobile users when the API changes go into effect.

• Make every day April Fool's Day. Like when r/DataIsBeautiful posted nothing but pics of Star Trek's Data. If you have no ideas, just google the sub name and see what you find!

• Set unreasonable posting requirements without an announcement, but noting the change in the side bar. Gotta read the fine print."

Set posts to require moderator approval.

• Approve 1 post every hour or only approve really poor quality ones.

Fracture the community.

• Announce alternative subs for your topic, which you also control, and encourage unsubbing from the original sub. Do some of the above, while also setting the sub to require accounts be subscribed for a month to post. Those that leave will find nothing in the alt subs, which they can't post to, and be unable to post on the main sub for a month. Also, fracturing the large subs will reduce traffic overall, due to the chaos.

• Remove and replace scrub mods where possible. If you get booted down the line, another supporter can continue the pattern.

• Forward any post remotely related to a product advertised on Reddit to that company's media contact for approval. Advertisers should know what is being associated with their brands. (And if some really gnarly stuff gets submitted by some non-mod account, it might be more impactful."

Hello, I am the founder of /r/RimWorldporn. We would like to move away from Reddit and are looking for a good alternative. We are kind of like /r/earthporn, so we require hosting of large images. We've been around for about 4 1/2 years and have accumulated roughly 30GB of images. The main advantage of Reddit is that it hosts relatively high quality images, for free. Would kbin be a suitable platform for this? We could host our own instance, maybe even centralize image storing on it.

Their post announcing it, has comments disabled. I have been going on reddit looking for polls to vote "yes" to continue to participate in the blackout. This was kind of a bummer.

Edit: Looking at the mods most recent post, they're still putting up a fight! And all new posts have 0 upvotes and I can't see comments from RiF anyway. Can anyone else see anything from other reddit apps?

I just logged in and checked my reddit account, and all my deleted posts have come back.

Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. Seems I jumped the gun on this and the restores haven't been intentional - at least not in this particular case.

There is a limitation in the popular Powerdelete that apparently prevents mass editing. Here is a link to a new version with a build-in delay and some other alternatives:

There are other reported cases where manually deleted post reappeared or other scripts have been used, so this doesn't solve all issues but explains how posts that were both edited and deleted withPowerdelete weren't properly deleted and reappeared after subs went back live.

Update: As some have pointed out: the restores can be rollbacks from the server issues or post haven't been properly deleted due to subs being private during blackouts. Many have experienced the same issue, I can't explain how this happens. I'll just run the script again, try the GDPR request and delete my account.

Also worth noting: according to the ToS Reddit can actually do whatever they want with existing content, apparently we agreed to this when signing up.

Hey everyone, I see a lot of people throwing around the term "enshittification" to describe the long-term and systemic decline of many of the centralized social media platforms, most recently Reddit. I commented this elsewhere, but thought everyone might benefit for reading Cory Doctorow's original article coining the term. The first sentence here sums it up nicely:

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

I'm a big proponent for tracing and crediting the origins of ideas, and I think this one speaks to a lot of people right now. For all its flaws and occasional user-unfriendliness, I think the main draw of the Fediverse is an escape from this profit-driven cycle.

Most data shown so far looked at the Peak per Minute numbers, so I wanted to see the day data instead.

I took the data from the blackout.photon-reddit site source.

It seems that it makes a Reddit Api call every Minute searching the newest Post and Comment and calculates both per Minute rates.

I wanted to see the effect the Blackout had over the day, so I summed the data and plotted it. Seems like between 11th and 12th June the comments/day diminished by -19.2%. The posts/day saw a decline of -8.9%.

I have also been looking at the Subreddit Stats: Most comments and posts come from r/Askreddit. On 13th June the Sub had 2.4% of the total comments and 0.44% of the total site posts. Sadly I can't see the list of the most commenting and posting subs from reddit before the Blackout because it doesn't seem to work on wayback machine.

But currently it seems like the Top100 commenting Subreddits only make out ~10% (Askreddit: ~1.5%) . So the bulk of the comments happens on the sheer number of other active subreddits.

The subreddit stats site also doesn't show how it gets the data and doesn't make it easy to see historical data overview. During the Blackout there seems to have been post spamming from a now banned german nsfw sub that had even more posts/day than Askreddit
