I really don't like Lower Decks. Before you downvote, I would never tell anyone it's bad or that they shouldn't like it. I just really can't figure out why most people seem to like it so much.

Similar to what I've heard many fans of LD say, I don't like Discovery or Picard either but I love Strange New Worlds. That seems to be pretty common among the Lower Decks fandom. Yet no matter how many times I try to watch LD I always end up borderline hating it. I don't even like the crossover episode with SNW.

For reference, the things I specifically dislike are: I don't find it funny; I think that the characters are too cynical, hyperactive or doe-eyed; and I'm normally a big proponent of 2D animation but I don't like LD's art style either.

It's cool that they have brought back so many characters, actors and details from the old days, but to me that's not enough to get over the things I don't like. I'm also not one to notice that they faithfully recreated a minor detail from the classic series without it being pointed out to me.

Is it just that my sense of humor and other tastes are too different, despite sharing a lot of other opinions with fans of LD? Or is it the deep Trek references that people love so much but often go over my head? Or is it something else entirely that I'm not getting that makes so many people love this show?

Whatever it is that's lost on me, I'm glad so many people are getting their joy from LD. I just need to convince my coworker to stop recommending it to me. :P

(I also spent over an hour editing this before posting it to make sure it sounds as diplomatic as possible, so hopefully I don't still manage to piss everyone off with my heresy.)

This episode just dropped yesterday and it sounds like they’re going to go through all of DS9 with Terry and Armin as regular hosts

I didn't recognise it at first tbh. As always I could give you the instruction as pdf if you didn't manage to get one of the advent calendars

I’ve recently been looking through this unbelievably detailed list/history of the chairs appearing in all the different Trek series/movies. Thought you all might enjoy!

It should also be found at the official site, but the actual clip doesn't seem to be working right now.

Whenever there's a storyline with quark, they talk about money/latinum.

I remember in one of the next gen episodes that there was discussion about money and Picard said something about how they've moved away from money.

So do Starfleet get paid now?

Update: thank you for the quick responses. From what I'm gathering the tldr is that the following is the answer

  • Ferengi love for money/not being a post scarcity society by design
  • Bajorans being so near their slavery times and not post scarcity yet
  • Quark creating an atmosphere of camaraderie/gambling/upgraded replicators/actual food

All this requires some form of currency.

Of course the real-world reason is that it's cheaper to shake the camera and set off a firecracker than to build a scale model just to paint a burn scar on the side.

But my thoughts were always that the in-universe reason had to do with the modular nature of federation starships.

In almost every episode, someone on a starship either suggests rerouting something, shunting power from one thing through another, bypassing something, compensating for one power source with another etc.

It seems that in space, being able to re-configure everything at a moment's notice is important, and to be able to do that, you need easy, fast and direct, access to everything, therefore it needs to be immediately accessible, ergo high voltage power directly behind the controls.

The lack of seatbelts goes right along with it. If a console blows up in someone's face, the next guy over needs to be able to quickly move down and take over. Don't need to have to be fighting with seatbelts when nobody is steering the ship.

I don't know why they don't have safety glasses however....

Super cool to get a feel for just how massive even the pre-refit Constitution class is.

I don't know whether this is an unpopular opinion or not but I actually think that the way Tasha Yar died gave the show much higher stakes throughout it's entire run. Here is the chief security officer, main bridge crew, tragic back story, potential love interest for the robot character just slapped down by the monster of the week. It made all the subsequent dangerous situations seem much more dire because "they were willing to kill off someone in the main cast". I also think that Yesterday's Enterprise was an awesome send off for that character that let them have a heroic ending for her after all.

It was a shame because I think Denise Crosby could have been awesome as a recurring character and in my opinion, we didn't get a great strong female character in the main cast (until DS9 which is an embarrassment of riches in that department). But I maintain that casually killing off Tasha Yar made my first watchthrough of TNG much more exciting.

I don't however like the additional stretch of her half-romulan daughter. It's pretty soap-opera-ish in my opinion and tarnishes the heroic sacrifice of her character.
