As much as I like decentralized alternatives there are plenty of information accounts that are quite useful. For example in my country the rail company informs about interruptions and other issues on Twitter, which is useful to know.

Such public services should not rely on a single communication channel controlled by a capricious private entity.

Agreed, got an AMBER alert on my phone the other day and the link for more info leads to their twitter account... Which I couldn't see without logging in.
