Hardware monitoring (programming.dev)
submitted 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) by Matty_r@programming.dev to c/linux_gaming@lemmy.world

Hey all, Just wondering what you use for hardware monitoring if you have an app that can show various speeds and temperatures etc?

Quick edit: what about stress testing as well?

Kazeta is a new OS by the creator of ChimeraOS. You might have seen some news on it in the last few days, or at least some posts on social media. Its not trying to be the next big gaming platform, it’s more like a little love letter to the old style of gaming. Instead of all those menus, online accounts, and updates, it takes things back to the basics: stick in a 'cartridge' you make yourself, turn on the system, and play. That’s it! No fuss, just the game you wanted to play.

What makes it extra fun is that the 'cartridges' are really just SD cards you load games onto. Label them, stack them, swap them around, it’s built to make you feel like you’re back in the ’90s, digging through a shoebox of game carts. For someone who wasn’t alive for that era of gaming (not even close, honestly), it’s a neat little glimpse of what it was like. A tactile vision of when games came on actual carts...well, kind of.

Kazeta is a neat mix of nostalgia and practicality, especially if you’re tired of modern gaming feeling like a chore.

I got the chance to chat with Alkazar, the dev behind Kazeta, and he shared some great insights into building the OS. This feature pulls together our conversation and what makes the project so unique.

You can find the link to that article I wrote here (on Gardiner Bryant's site), and I hope you enjoy it! Please let me know what you think, of it...and my writing!

Hi there,

I'm pondering whether upgrading to a 9070 XT would make sense in my situation, because it wouldn't be based on performance issues but usability concerns. I'm very happy with the level of performance I get with my 3080 10GB in most cases, lack of VRAM notwithstanding, and it's perfectly capable for any game I want to play at 1440p. I'm especially happy with DLSS (3 or 4), but other aspects are annoying:

  • HDR support is still very limited, because gamescope and nvidia don't mix too well and system-wide support is iffy at best (colour accuracy is usually far worse afaict).
  • Issues inherent to Nvidia, such as lower DX12 performance, start to take a toll on performance and stability. I've also mentioned it before, but 10GB VRAM is becoming an issue at higher texture res for quite a few games.
  • Very limited overclocking/undervolting (mostly the latter) options on Linux.

Now a 9070 XT wouldn't be an upgrade in all terms, I might lose out on RT performance and, most importantly to me, upscaling quality.
FSR4 is a reality in very few games atm, but OptiScaler could save the day.
And I'd obviously have to pay an additional $500 CAD, at best, while reselling my 3080.

Did anyone make a similar jump from Nvidia to AMD? Are you missing anything in particular? Losing out on DLSS4 is my biggest concern tbh.

Proton broken? (sopuli.xyz)

So, I'm not really sure where to ask properly. So, let's try my luck here :)

A couple of weeks ago, a bunch of games I had been playing on Steam through Proton just abruptly stopped working. I got some to work by adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% in each broken game's launch options. Therefore it has something to do with OpenGL, if I understand correctly.

Some games that were affected were Fallout 3 and Mafia. Now Mafia seems to run without that launch option again, but Fallout 3 still doesn't even launch without it.

If I set that launch option, I get as far as this menu:

...but clicking on Continue or Loading a save crashes the game immediately.

I've been playing Fallout 3 on this machine for over 10 hours just fine, and this problem just appeared one day. Anybody know (or could guess?) what the root cause is and what could be done about it?

New PC, use both GPUs? (programming.dev)

Hey all, I know that switchable graphics is a thing in laptops where there is usually a single port. But how would you go about it on desktop? Do you put your monitor in the onboard HDMI or on the dGPU port? There are other issues associated with doing it of course, but I thought it might save on power and noise if I used the iGPU as much as possible.

Only have a nvidia GPU at the moment, but hoping to get an AMD 9070 at some point

According to this video (6:34), Zotac Zone Pro should have eGPU support confirmed by Manjaro lead Philip Müller https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kfkRPXOLU4

Disclaimer: Someone in the comments pointed out that this affects Nvidia only. I don't have AMD, so I can't verify if that's correct, but likely this is only for fellow sufferers of the Green Nightmare.

I had this issue for months. Randomly, the performance for games would be abysmal (I'm talking 5 FPS in 10yo indie 3D titles). Then it would randomly work again for a few days or weeks until it would become terrible again.

Turns out, the reason for that was that flatpak appears to cause trouble when the system GPU driver is updated, but flatpak update isn't run. So when I did dnf update (and it updated the Nvidia driver) without running flatpak update afterwards, the performance would suck, until something (or I) ran flatpak update again.

So if the performance in games launched through a flatpak version of a launcher like heroic sucks, run flatpak update.

And if that doesn't work, run

flatpak install flathub org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-575-64-05 org.freedesktop.Platform.GL32.nvidia-575-64-05

(Replace the version with your Nvidia driver version, and in case of AMD, google whatever the appropriate way is to install the drivers for flatpak.)

What's up, guys, gals, and non-binary pals? I switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint back in December 2024, and I catalogued my experiences in these posts:

Just wanted to let you nerds know that everything has been running flawlessly. I can play any game I have, and none of my productivity is blocked. Doesn't matter whether it's all my ROMs I archived, my Steam games, GOG games, whatever. Linux plays them, and performance is fantastic. I don't play any anti-cheat games as the only one I do play periodically is Overwatch, and it runs perfect.

I can without a doubt now say that I will never go back to Windows. Should have switched years ago!

Build specs (the full list is in my first post linked above):

  • CPU 9800x3d
  • GPU RX 7900 XTX

Here are some issues I still can't solve on Linux Mint:

  • Can't control my GPU fans
  • Can't control my case fans
  • Can't bind my case fans to ramp up with GPU load

I've tried CoreCTRL and so many other solutions I read online, and none of them work. Problem for another day! So all I've done for now is increase the count of intake fans I have and set it to a good speed to move plenty of air (but also set my exhaust fans higher to help counter and ensure proper positive pressure airflow. I have too many fans to get the ideal balance of neutral air flow). GPU runs with OEM fan speeds.

Edit: There's a bug in pasting instance agnostic links, so I just added direct URLs to my instance posts.

Hi!

First, I'd like to apologize for asking the age-old question yet again.

I'm running Bazzite right now with a 50-series nvidia, and have no real complaints. I did manage to bork up coolercontrol pretty nicely, though, and am going to use it as an excuse to try another distro (and update my m.2 while I'm at it).

My knowledge level is not terrible, but I prefer spending more time gaming than tweaking.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Artificial Intelligence in Open Source Game Development

@linux_gaming

This is my first attempt posting to Lemmy, and I probably should have chosen something a bit more straightforward. I wrote this article on my Discourse server, which is federated with #ActivityPub, so replies from #Mastodon or #Lemmy should be visible in the thread. Unfortunately, I don't think that applies when I share the link in a separate post - as I am doing here. Maybe I'm wrong, though!

Part 2: https://www.lttlabs.com/blog/2025/06/30/is-2025-the-year-of-the-linux-desktop-part-ii

LTT Fourm discussion as well https://linustechtips.com/topic/1616595-lttlabs-article-is-2025-the-year-of-the-linux-desktop-part-i-ii/

They approached this from a noob perspective and the benchmarks seemed pretty rough. The blog has an overall positive tone on linux which is nice even though it got murdered in performance.

I'd like to see a follow up with optimizations, get some of the linux community involved to help setup an optimized linux test bench to go toe to toe with their "golden image" windows 11 benchmark setup.

They benchmarked a few distros against each other and it was very samey which I expected, the real difference is between the drivers/kernel and desktop environment since most distros come very light in terms of installed software.

This post had a lot really good suggestions for couch coop games on Linux and I was wondering if there are controllers people recommend or if all the third party ones are the same? I have an Xbox controller with Bluetooth I might be able to find but they are kind of pricey so I don't want to buy another unless for some reason that's the best thing. I'm open to wired and wireless I just don't want to end up with some cheap piece of shit that makes playing not fun.

Preferably free or at least not to expensive (<20 EUR)

Edit: Thank you so much for all your great suggestions! I now have to buy 2 controllers I think? Steam does not say what input hardware is needed for local multiplayer.

The mod is supposed ro inject 3 dlls on launch from what it seems (winmm.dll, miniupnpc.dll, and discord-rpc.dll. there is also another dll located in the SMT/Scripts folder provided by the mod called smt_release.dll.) the mod comes with a launcher but it seems to only set the launch options "-mp" in steam it doesn't inject the dlls itself.

When you launch the game with said launch option you are supposed to get a new menu with options "host" and "join". However the dlls do not seem to inject properly and therefore it loads the normal spiderman "continue" "load" options.

The devs have said that linux isn't a priority right now, but I feel that with enough elbow grease it might work.

I have tried running the mod through lutris, heroic, and proton through steam and it still won't budge. I even ran the launcher through steam and it sets the proper launch options and launches the game but it still doesn't inject on launch.

Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: it seems to be an issue with the winmm.dll, all other dlls allow the game to launch, just with no multiplayer mod.
