Inspired by recently buying a cajon, and my husband immediately buying another for additional living room seating because he loved it.

AI error message (lemmy.world)

I am trying to create an AI character on perchance.org and I am getting the following error:

An error has occurred somewhere in your code (in lists or HTML): An unhandled promise rejection occurred: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'name') TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'name') at autoNameThreadIfNeeded (:6117:15)

I'm not entirely sure what it is trying to tell me, so any guidance as to what to look for would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have two degrees in philosophy. I quit my PhD with an MA after I realized academic life wasn't for me.

When people find this out about me... they rarely react positivity anymore. Most are confused, some look upset, others get defensive or crack cliche jokes about how I got a job with a useless degree like that or if I work at McDonalds.

It seems to have gotten way worse the past few years. In my late 20s/early 30s people seemed to react a lot more positively to this fact about my life? People would ask me about it and why I did it and what I studied specifically. I really liked those conversations.

I feel naive as to why philosophy is so controversial for the average person, anymore than English or History is? I really enjoyed my studies and still do them as a hobby now.

I may need to say something that is (seemingly) nice about someone, but I’d prefer it be very subtly backhanded or nearly believable hyperbole.

Hi ! I was wondering if there is something like Pinterest, but free/open source/ethical ? Like, something that doesn't use all our datas to train AIs, without any adds... And which is kinda like Pinterest (possibility to make boards of ideas/photos from internet). I tried Raindrop, but this is not open source as far as I know...

I play rhythm games a lot and accidentally developed a taste for hardcore/speedcore music, which is probably uncommon. So this is something I'm quite curious

I think my cutoff for considering something fast is like between 200-220 BPM. For example, xi - FREEDOM DiVE has a BPM of 222.22, which... apparently I only consider as "fast". Too fast is like 300 BPM for me

I keep noticing that in non ad cluttered UIs and searches my eyes automatically go to the secondary information sometimes making me miss the primary information.

Someone will say “click on “name” element” and I’ll search for it but miss it even though it’s the most “eye catching” thing. Or I find I open the link a few down from the top one even if it’s not sponsored.

The mental filter to find good information hiding in a sea of dominant splashy advertisements has resulted in a reduction in my performance in processing well meaning eye catching designs meant to guide me to useful information.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I love rye whiskey and want to buy a really great bottle of it for special occasions. I've had Angel's Envy rye and loved it, but want to know of others that I haven't tried/maybe lesser known. Since it's for special occasions, $100-$200 price range is fine.

Are there any websites or communities dedicated to finding offline alternatives to software that is unnecessarily-Internet based?

I can think of two use cases:

  • Software-as-a-service for something that could easily be a downloadable program to run locally
  • "Smart" devices that require you to connect to the Internet, and serve you ads

There are websites for finding FOSS alternatives to proprietary apps, EU alternatives to American services, etc. but I don't see a website for local-app alternatives to online services.

I'm non-American myself but I am an Asian who immigrated to Europe. The news and social media here show the US imploding under Trump regime. My cousin immigrated to the US, but I am surprised that he doesn't know about the wanton ICE arrests and harassment of anyone who is of foreign origin, even white foreigners and tourists. Initially, he said that "only illegals are getting arrested", but was equally surprised or nonplussed when I told him about what is happening. Well, he's already there, and I did tell him to be careful just in case.

Maybe I should not be surprised because news in my home country generally put the US in pedestal. Since the end of World War II, people feel like we owe the US a lot after being liberated from Japanese occupation, even though we ourselves were formerly a US colony. So, the local media tend to portray the US as a pristine and perfect society. But my compatriots residing in the US say it is overrated, depending where you are, because of rampant homelessness, no social welfare and worsening cost of living crisis. Now, that I think about it, the local media never really portrayed those about the US when I was growing up. Of course, US is still miles ahead than any given developing country in terms of standard of living, but still overrated I understand.

It's a video game where there's a mission in which you have to destroy a missile silo. But the silo tracks you and fires a missile right at your location every several seconds. It makes a loud boom sound in the distance every time it fires. And it stops firing once you get to a close enough distance.

I'm pretty sure it's an open world game, perhaps a bit like Just Cause? This might be some Mandela effect shit because I'm not even 100% sure this game exists.

Good audiobooks (lemmy.zip)
submitted 1 day ago by stoy@lemmy.zip to c/asklemmy@lemmy.world

I have recently got into audiobooks, with a focus on classic sci-fi, I just finnished Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clark (narrated by Peter Gamin), which is absolutely brilliant, highly recommended, and The Time Machine by H. G. Wells (narrated by Kelsey Grammer, free on Apple Books), also brilliant, very different from the 1960s film.

Anyway do you have any tips on classic sci-fi (1870s-1990s) that I should listen to?

I use Apple Books to buy the books, I am not really interested in audiobook streaming, I want to own my books, not rent access to them.

At the moment I have several books that I need to listen to, but I want to buy more now so I have them in my library.

I have the following books in my library:

  • Rendezvous with Rama - Arthur C Clark - Narrated by Peter Gamin
  • The Invisible Man - H. G. Wells - Narrated by Alexandra Coles
  • The Time Machine - H. G. Wells - Narrated by Kelsey Grammer
  • The World Set Free - H. G. Wells - Narrated by Sebastian Blackwood
  • I, Robot - Isaac Asimov - Narrated by Scott Brick
  • Ignition, An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants - John Drury Clark - Narrated by Jonathan Todd Ross

I am planning on getting 2001: A Space Oddesy and some even more Arthur C. Clark...

I've recently started reading the book by Dale Carnegie and so far, roughly a third into it, I've found it pretty good although not revolutionary. What are you folk's opinions on it?

Addendum: also any advice for making genuine connections and interact with people for someone whose social skills are not the sharpest?

I know Lemmy is gonna say "stop being addicted to your phone" but like I'm asking this question with more of a like "fuck corporate" attitude. I mean like, just a quick peak at an internet thread, wikipedia, news, memes, etc. Maybe messages or group chats... Just an occasion glance every like 15 minutes or so to keep yourself sane, like a little drip of dopamine to get you through the day, you know.

Or is a smartwatch hidden under long sleeves better?

Or like... is text to voice better? (Like with a hidden earbud hidden under some wigs to listen to the text, while the other ear can still can have awareness of surroundings?)

There may be an age or generational explanation for this, but I especially notice this behavior on Reddit while not nearly as much here on Lemmy (though maybe that's also a mater of implementation).

It seems many are so quick to assert overly-confident positions, but then hit-and-run with some smarmy remark at even the slightest challenge, then quickly block. Like, not even crazy stuff. Just basic, civil disagreements. I can pretty well predict when it will happen, and it always feels like such a petty ego-sparing fingers-in-ears denial thing to do, and to me if anything shows they were not very confident in their views being challenged.

I think I've only blocked a handful of people over a decade who were actively spamming, stalking, or spewing extremely hateful rhetoric and I just reported them simultaneously. You have to cross a pretty extreme and irrational line for me to do that.

The reason I ask is to see if I'm missing something; to better understand the mindset of those who do.

I've been slowly moving away from Reddit, but I still go there occasionally. I was using it last night. Today, my account does not work. As I never used a real email address for it, there is no recovering it, but it's weird that it's just GONE. I had two other alts, both also gone. There was nothing that I saw in an inbox or message anywhere about "hey, we don't like you, you go away now" or anything. Just POOF. Anyone else or just me?

Perhaps it's for the best, just rip the band aid off and stop hanging around there anyway. Good times were had, but I guess it's time to move on.
