I've noticed this too on clips of social media posts. I would imagine the purpose is to standardize the size of pictures into a square, but I don't know what tool is doing it.
I think that's just @LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone making those memes a little more pleasing to the eye.

They're what my algorithm is giving me on Instagram. Don't know if it's a current trend or just my algorithm knows I like it
