[Edit: We are 11 people interested so far!]

Anyone interested? It's very long in total (could be like 2k pages) and people probably dont read it linearly, but I figured it'd be cool to take up on it:)

So far, I'vs finished reading Section A and has been very informative. I've tried to keep notes of it in .md format here:

https://codeberg.org/BlastboomStrice/book-notes/src/branch/main/AFAQ-Summary.md

If this fails, maybe we could pick other smaller books, but me personally might not be able to participate (already reading afaq and another book).

I'm in.

Been meaning to learn how to read

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah I've actually been meaning to do a full linear reading of the FAQ since forever. Not sure how much time I'll be able to put in during the semester but I could probably be pressured into doing it if there's enough people not to let down 😆.

Yo letsgoo

I think it took me like 1-2months to read section A (180 pdf pages) which is about 10% of afaq

So I suppose it will take 1-2years if I dont give up

Edit: yo I realise you were the one who made the post that this one appears to be a cross-post of, wow

I urge everyone yo join. One of the best resources on the subject

Thank you for the encouragement db0:)

I'm interested :) would the group reading start from Section A or pick off where you left off tho? i'd be fine with either

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 6 points 4 weeks ago

Yooo hello fxomt

I thibk it'd made sense to start from the beginning. Section A also seems very important part of the faq:)

Anyone who has advanced could participate I guess on discussions about previous parts or wait or make a new group if there are enough people (kinda doubt there will be enough people)

Afaq is so long that almost surely some will be behind and others will ahead of others, so dunno how it will go😅

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 3 weeks ago

I mean I think for AFAQ in particular it's fine if someone jumps in the middle. As a FAQ, it's written with the understanding that people will read it in pieces.

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

True

Hmm, what if we just do a weekly post about afaq and people can discuss their progress and thoughts without making the post specific to the section each member of the community reads (each user will just mention it in the comments).

It could be like afaq group reading week #1234

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 3 weeks ago

I mean this might be selfish but for me personally, it would be nice to have some amount of structure and "peer pressure" to get the reading done. Like "okay here's the part of the FAQ we're on today", and if someone else wants to talk about some other part that's cool too, but you know.. sometimes. it's nice to do things as a group 😃.

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 5 points 3 weeks ago

I see yeah, cool cool, we could do that:)

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 weeks ago

sounds good to me :) How would the reading group be organized tho? i mean on which platform so we could actually share

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 6 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Hmm maybe here like hexbear does?

Edit: rereading this I'd like to say that we ended up using both this post on lemmy and the /0 anarchism room on matrix to organise it:)

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 3 weeks ago

For those who aren't aware of how Hexbear does stuff: reading groups are weekly/monthly/whatever Lemmy threads where whoever runs the group pings everyone in one of the comments. So basically once a week/months/whatever, you'd see a thread about AFAQ, and if you want you can sign up to get pinged.

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 5 points 3 weeks ago

Oh cool (I too wasnt very sure how they run them:)

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 weeks ago

good idea, should we make a new community on dbzer0 for reading theory, or tracking it in this comm?

[-] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

I think a weekly book club style post would work specifically for this, but maybe an "anarchists book-club" comm would be good for going forward and exploring other works? I'd be into that.

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

If this one is a success I think a wider reading group community could work :)

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I think doing it in this community is fine. IMO it would be cool for newcomers to see that there's theory behind the praxis.

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

Cool, so a reading thread here about each week :)

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I say keep it here unless this sub starts becoming too active, then you can split to a new comm

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Will do, thanks.

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 5 points 3 weeks ago

Hmm, I'd probably start from here, see how it goes and if it's too spammy then split it? (also instances with members not subbed to the reading communities might not see that community)

[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 weeks ago

I'm definitely interested.

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That's 5 readers now 🎊

[-] xiwi@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

I want to be in pleaseee

[-] underscores@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'd be interested. I've checked out parts of it over the years but haven't looked at most of it.

[-] stepan@lemmy.cafe 6 points 3 weeks ago

Not sure how is it supposed to work, but definitely count me in!

[-] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

sign me up!

Btw, this seems mildly outdated*

Its latest version is 15.8 (2024/7/4). Not sure how often they update it

Edit: here's the version history/changes

[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I wrote a shitty python script to make an updated one: https://files.catbox.moe/mi41sy.epub

edit: fixed link to point towards unfuckked epub.

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago
[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

Wait, nevermind that epub is completely broken

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago
[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

ok, I unfucked the epub, before I reupload it, what would you suggest I use as the cover?

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yay:) haha Im yoo sleepy now to suggest anything

[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

https://files.catbox.moe/mi41sy.epub -- just chose the enclosed a on a red/black background.

[-] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

I'd like to try!

[-] FundMECFS@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

Can someone volunteer to give that website a mobile compatible viewing mode. It would make it far more accessible.

(I’d theoretically love to join your reading but the extent of my chronic illness means it’s very unlikely I’d be able to keep up fully. I’d love to jump in and out if that’s possible tho :))

[-] BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago

If it helps, irelephant made an epub version of it: https://files.catbox.moe/mi41sy.epub

[-] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

No worries! The intros are pretty short, and A.1 is also very short :) nevertheless, no pressure if you can't read it all. We actually just started a few minutes ago https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/51243397

[-] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

When I clicked the link, a couple of hours ago, I just went ahead and read through it all without realising.

Great resource, thanks for the share.

I'd probably not have the time for a complete read of a longer edition.
