We need to be doing objective measurements about what their algorithms spit out.
I’m sure X will go on and on about how they’re the modern town square, despite them being the most draconian politically biased major platform by far.
Same with Meta. How do they justify being in line with handling misinformation and their new “anti woke” policies? It’s fundamentally at odds with our laws.
We need to be able to independently look at the source code of those algorithms, no more black boxes controlled by the broligarchs alone.
Reminder that “engagement” is likely a major factor regardless of whether it’s agreement or not. Commenting that you disagree with something is the same as commenting agreement as far as the algorithm is concerned. Ignoring things that you don’t want to spread seems like a good way to combat this, but that leaves you with the “echo chamber” issue. If we only engage with things we agree with then our ideals are never challenged and we don’t have an opportunity to improve. Seems kind of damned if you do damned if you don’t.
You have to look at a lot more than the source code, there is so much that can affect the same algorithm with different input data.
Companies who fail to provide adequate support should have their Canadian operations nationalized and handed over to the CPP.
Seems like a bit of an extreme first step.
We're talking about meta and musk here. I wouldn't even talk to them. Just seize assets and block for espianage. Probably make arrests as well.
I agree, but I think it's necessary. Perhaps rather just the CPP the shares could belong to various different public pension funds.
There is too much risk that a second step won't be possible, or will be made ineffective.

Currently there is no meaningful cost to platforms for the consequences their inaction causes. Facebook's contribution to the Myanmar genocide is well documented and yet the lawsuit against them was dismissed in the US. It would be outright dangerous to assume responsibility or good faith from these large platforms.
No representative of the Canadian government nor anyone running for such a position should even be permitted to post on X, given the hostile foreign ownership. I'll let smarter people than me make the same argument for Facebook ect.
The amount of manipulation that is available to X and Facebook makes it bonkers that any official government message is ever delivered on it.
Can you imagine 100 years ago being Canada and having Japan or Germany print your newspapers and deliver them to your people for you?
I don't think a 36 day shutdown of that shit would hurt.
