Looking at the research megathread it's pretty hard to avoid the conclusion that Nicole is a victim of harassment.

If you follow any of the links in the message her work address is right there. It doesn't take much effort to confirm it is her real work address.

It's an unfulfilling answer but it is the most plausible. The only question is what next?

I feel like posting screen caps of the PMs with witty titles isn't really the right way to go. I know no one means any harm but we're just perpetuating the exposure and probably even encouraging the perpetrator.

Others have already tried to make her aware that she's being harassed through various avenues - a tricky proposition.

I presume devs are continually trying to improve anti-spam measures.

Maybe we could be a bit more respectful with the posts here, or discourage repeat posts of the same image.

I'm not some arbiter of ethics and morality trying to tell you all what to do, I just think these issues are worth some consideration and discussion.

We've already identified it as a crypto scam.

I doubt nicole is receiving anything negative from this, if she's even real.

A crypto scam where the scammer posts their real work address?

[–] armsfulmetathes@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

Probably just to make her seem more legitimate. Like "see, I'm totally real! Here's me at work!"

If they wanted to harass her, they'd post more revealing information like her last name and home address.

I think nicole is just an unfortunate mark of some team of scammers who barely speak English.

We need to orient the discussions towards the spammer, phisher and identity thief rather than the real person.

I also think that whoever Nicole is, or at least the person in the picture and who's work address if given, probably isn't in on whatever's going on here. I certainly don't think she's the mastermind behind it all. It all feels more like some nebulous revenge scheme or in the very least a red herring to divert attention off of the crypto-scheme and whoever's behind it.

So here's the thing.

"Nicole" is the only spam I have got on Lemmy.

On other platforms (phone, WhatsApp etc.), I treat repeated spam as harassment.

Also, this is probably my first comment on this community.

I usually go with: Leave me alone and I leave you alone.
But I am definitely not being left alone by this "Nicole"

You may have misunderstood my post.

You are not being harassed by Nicole.

Someone is encouraging people to harass Nicole by spamming her details to everyone.

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ahh, then I definitely misunderstood it.

But I wasn't ever considering Nicole to be the actual person doing the thing. Even call-spam people make sure to use a non-recallable number and most probably use fake names.

I associate "Nicole" with whatever thing that is spamming the DMs

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 6 days ago

Yes but Nicole is an actual person who is being doxxed with these posts.

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 6 points 6 days ago

I've got a couple other spam messages. Nicole is by far the most common, but there have been others. There will be many more in the future as the fediverse is discovered. The real question is what are the devs doing. Not just lemmy devs - mastodon, mbin, peertube... devs all need to do something - maybe at the protocol level.

[–] bane_killgrind@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 days ago

So the way to handle this is people local to that business make a report to the local police, that a woman is being doxxed and she may have a stalker. The police handle it.

100% there are people creating an unhealthy obsession with her and this community is feeding it. She will have negative consequences due to this.

100% there are people creating an unhealthy obsession with her and this community is feeding it. She will have negative consequences due to this.

And that may have been the harasser's goal all along. It's no secret the internet is full of misguided investigators and people who don't realize how their curiosity can be harmful to others.

Hopefully "Nicole" isn't being subjected to other forms of harassment too.

Before this community existed, all content was just scattered over different communities and instances - 196, ShitPosts, ShowerThoughts, Fediverse, etc. At least with one single community it's easy for the admins to remove 90% of content instantly.
And yes, for obsessed people it does lift the burden of needing to search through many posts, but so does it for admins and investigators, in order to find patterns in the messages, that can be used for blocking them.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Couldn't admins just check PMs and see which account has sent a million?

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 4 points 6 days ago

There are hundreds of different accounts, without little correlation in itself now (previously it was something like nicoleXX)

[–] lath@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Truman Show variant. We're the audience, Nicole's the unknowing star.
