“This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever fathom from a law enforcement perspective,” McNeil said.

Every time I think my opinion of cops is at rock bottom, they find a new way to piss me off. This shooting is special and bad because one of our people might get in trouble for it!!

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 72 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And the usage of "you people" feels intentionally pointed. Insulting to everyone's intelligence/sense of empathy.

Then they go on to claim that they'll make sure mass shootings won't be tolerated in this country. Well where the fuck has this person been for the past few decades?

[–] Rookwood@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 3 days ago

It's just cop logic. They really do see it as them vs. the general public. That's the reason ACAB.

Okay, so not that I think cops deserve fairness, but in fairness...

If she had an extremely strong devotion to her community and a sense of duty to those people, I could see how that would add a layer of grief and guilt on top of her son being an attempted mass murderer.

But given that her son had access to at least one of her weapons, I'm not certain that she's any different from the rest of the pro-gun-toting rules-don't-apply-to-us that most of the "blue lives" are.

Based on the grandmother's comments, I don't think these are good people.

There’s criminals under every rock and behind every tree. Gotta have unsecured guns within easy reach at all times. On counters, in bedside drawers, in closets, under car seats…

As a reminder again, not a transgender not a drag queen not a Democrat, not an immigrant.

[–] Trebuchet@lemm.ee 92 points 3 days ago (8 children)

I don't get it. If you're a far-right asshole in America right now, what do you have to be angry about?

[–] the_q@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

The anger is the point. An angry person is easier to manipulate.

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 80 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You saw this a lot in Trump's first term too. Essentially they're pissed that the world still sucks even though their guy got elected and it's breaking their brains because they think the problem is that Trump hasn't killed all the minorities or made women property or whatever it is they think will fix the world and that all hope is lost.

[–] blandfordforever@lemm.ee 21 points 3 days ago

Its terrifying that rather than having to admit that they were wrong, people will usually double down on their positions.

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back." - Carl Sagan

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's the thing. They are getting what they thought they wanted but their miserable lives so far have not become one bit less miserable. The cognitive dissonance must hurt like hell.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

Wait until the tariffs on Chinese goods hit in the next few weeks, and EVERYTHING in Walmart and Target double in price. TEMU and Schein have said that the low-cost model is dead, and their prices are going to jump in the next two weeks.

They are going to have a very hard time blaming it on the Libz, no matter how delusional they are.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

They're angry that they havent been given permission to start The Purge against everybody who isn't MAGA.

Now "the liberals and their courts" are trying to stop HitlerPig's agenda, and they're getting really froggy. At some point, HitlerPig is going to make a statement that they'll interpret as "Go," and we'll have massacres all over the country.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 27 points 3 days ago

Experiencing the outcomes of their policy positions. That's the thing about having bad ideas. Even when you win, you lose.

Fascists hate each other just as much as they hate everyone else. It's why fascism never lasts.

Unsurprising. Lone actor grievance fuelled violence also often has misogynistic roots.

Let me tell you, as someone who isn’t getting news from television or the formerly awesome Breaking News (a digital news aggregator that was bought by NBC and later shutdown in 2016), things are bad when you hear about a mass shooting a day after it occurs. This shouldn’t be happening but it should be the worst thing making headlines. The fact it got drown out by President Dumbberfuckle Trumperdickle isn’t good.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Here in Florida, it was on the news the instant it happened, and EVERY local news station immediately sent their top anchor to the school. The 6 pm news had all of them broadcasting from campus.

In fact, coverage of the shooting was so pervasive, that a local CVS burned out during the incident, injuring 3. I'm still trying to find any follow up news coverage, but they skipped it almost entirely. A major pharmacy had a major fire in the middle of the day, and I'd like to know why. How did it start? Was it arson? Was it terrorism? Is there surveillance footage? Why are authorities so quiet about it? Why isnt the news following up on it, and finding the most basic answers?

The FSU shooting sucked up 100% of the bandwidth, and there were no other stories that day, except sports and weather, of course.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This seems like user error to me. Find better sources for news.

I usually use news.google.com and click on the "full coverage" button for individual articles.

This shooting was the top story immediately, and stayed up for at least 1-2 days

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 40 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Does this terrorist go to the feds for prosecution and get the death penalty?

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Are you kidding? He's going to the feds for an interview.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I was, of course, being facetious. These fuckers will build statues for serial killers.

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 52 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It seems odd his mom is a sheriff given her criminal record. I would expect abducting a child to a foreign country would disqualify someone from law enforcement.

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

~~You misread.~~

Stepmom was a sheriff.

Mom is a dual citizen Norway/US. She is only a criminal because she tried to get her son away from his father by taking him to Norway.

Edit: I see there may have been an article edit.

[–] stankmut@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It was his stepmom's gun, not the mom's. Article was probably edited at some point, since I see at least one place where they forgot the step part.

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

That makes a lot more sense, there was no mention of a stepmom when I read it.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 44 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Important to point out that it wasn't her service weapon. An officer allowing their service weapon to be used by others would be an additional serious violation of law.

This was a weapon that she purchased from the Sheriff's office when they were upgrading gear. It was, at one point, her service weapon but at the time of the shooting it was just a personally owned firearm.

It's an important distinction since this kind of misinformation implies that she was careless in securing her service weapon.

Her son was an adult and had legal access to a legally owned firearm and chose to kill people. Trying to make it about his mother because she's a cop is a pointless distraction.

Source: Public statements by Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure I follow, what difference does it make? He used her weapon, whatever name you put on it to kill people, because she did not store her weapons properly...

Whether it's her service weapon or emotional support weapon, it kills all the same....

After the Parkland Massacre, Convicted Criminal Fraudster and Florida Governor Rick Scott pushed the state legislature to raise the age of gun ownership to 21. Since then, he has spent his career, now Senator, trying to change the subject whenever gun control comes up. He doesn't want anyone to remember him as the Republican governor who tried to reduce school shootings through common sense gun control.

Super Troll DeSatan not only lowered the age of handgun ownership to 18, he also abolished the old concealed carry law that required a four-hour class to get a concealed carry permit. Any 18 year old in Florida can buy a gun, stick it in their waistband, and walk around in public.

So this guy was legally allowed to possess this gun, and carry it. Currently, possession of a firearm is still illegal on a Florida college campus, but MAGA state senator Randy Fine (now a US congressman) filed legislation in February to make it legal to carry a gun on campus. Florida Republican legislators have filed a similar bill almost every year, and it always fails to pass. Now they'll say that if guns were allowed on campus, someone would have stopped this guy, and it will pass.

[–] Jaderick@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

In the interest of truth this is good, but it does not change my view on law enforcement or their incapabilities.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Of course, but fight them with facts.

Misinformation is in nobody's best interest.

[–] Shiggles@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Correct, an officer of the law should be expected to understand safe gun handling and storage practices. Being a cop should elevate the standards you’re held to, not fucking lower them lmao.

[–] Gerudo@lemm.ee 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, but apparently, the weapon was easy enough to access. Something a cop should have a higher standard of.

[–] numanair@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 days ago

And yet there is a lower standard for them even after leaving the force

[–] Rookwood@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Your source is incredibly biased to take as fact at face value.

But are we sure he wasn't transgender, or maybe a drag queen?

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

He was apparently a dual citizen though, a filthy Norwegian

[–] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No shit. Had he had radical leftist views, he would have violently redistributed his lunch.

[–] forrgott@lemm.ee 9 points 3 days ago (5 children)

And now I'm imagining leftists going around projectile vomiting on people.

Better: projectile vomiting on the great orange turd or anyone in his assministration.
