Collapse, in this context, refers to the significant loss of an established level or complexity towards a much simpler state. It can occur differently within many areas, orderly or chaotically, and be willing or unwilling. It does not necessarily imply human extinction or a singular, global event. Although, the longer the duration, the more it resembles a ‘decline’ instead of collapse.

Multiple climate "tipping points" are likely to be triggered if global policies stay on their current course, new research shows.

Scientists assessed the risk of "tipping" in 16 different parts of the Earth system -- ranging from the collapse of major ice sheets to the dieback of tropical coral reefs and vast forests.

Nothing much new for this paying attention, just more reinforcement

Well, that's one way to put it. Civilisation will collapse and billions of people will die, unless we immediately knock it off with the burning of fossil fuels and then go on to make many more changes as well. It's been a good twenty years or more since we collectively became aware of it. The whole world continues to act as if it does not care. In Canada people are happy that we got rid of the carbon tax and the leading politicians are competing over who's more in favour of oil pipelines. Despite perfect weather for it I was the only one on my bicycle today on a road full of cars speeding past. The countries that have made more progress than mine towards their stated goal of "net zero" haven't even begun to seriously consider the hard part as of yet. The mass extinction continues and things are not looking good. I've seen it coming for a long time but I'm getting the feeling there's not much time left. Enjoy this life of luxury while it lasts, people of Earth.
