France is mobilising 7,000 soldiers and increasing its alert status to "emergency attack" level after the death of a teacher in the northeast town of Arras, stabbed to death Friday by a former student with a record of Islamic radicalisation.

President Emmanuel Macron made the decision after convening an emergency meeting of his security cabinet on Friday night.

Macron has described the stabbing attack, which left two other staff members at the school seriously injured, as "Islamist terrorism."

Goddamn what is going on in France...

[–] Xia@jlai.lu 54 points 1 year ago (3 children)

As a French : yes this is horrible but the mess is worldwide and remember that 1 death in a country of 67 millions people is not the end.

Oh and of course we get used to it…

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 51 points 1 year ago

And watch how they're gonna use that to further spy on us and restrict our freedoms, even though the guy was already monitored and still managed to slip through.

[–] NightLily@lemmy.basedcount.com 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I more mean why are they activating the military units and what not the murder and what not is understandable if bad the weird part is 1 death spiralling into the military mobilisation that happened at least to me.

[–] nyoooom@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because of the ongoing Israel-Palestine situation, it's probably much more likely that extremists might commit terrorist attacks, and we have had a history of attacks going by waves, so they're being careful in advance

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"Let's avoid more terrorism by sending troops there to shoot them."

I hate to break it to yall, but America spent 20 years figuring out that doesn't work that well.

[–] nyoooom@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It doesn't really work like that in France, especially in the military, this is more a display of force than anything else imho

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So security theater. It accomplishes nothing

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

They do accomplish things. This attacks test and measure (implicitly) reaction time and let that nation know that the attacker is capable of reaching, and therefore attacking that point.

Scrambling/readiness state shows:

That enemy/unidentified hostiles will be intercepted, and destroyed if necessary.

Sends a message that the country's (or whosoever) defenses are on alert and will react swiftly to any perceived threat.

Sends a message that the intruding enemy is not wanted and will not be tolerated.

it also provides an unexpected drill for the militia. So bonus points I guess

[–] Xia@jlai.lu 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Because there is a high risk of escalation while the conflict between Israel et Palestine is ongoing

[–] Chariotwheel@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

Yeah, Germany hasn't activated soldiers yet, but the police in all states is on high alert and direct protection of Jewish buildings was bumped up. If there was a murder, we would probably too activate more units for responses.

Southern neighbours here, we've been doing a simlar thing for the last 15 years (same number of men too: 7000) and the result have been pretty great thus far. As expensive as this is going to be I think Macron made the right call.

If it helps any at all, I just checked, between 1990 and 2000 France dealt with one terrorist attack every ~13.53 days. Your people could survive that you can survive this. Hope that helps.

This is the decade we kill each other before we kill the planet, isn't it?

[–] Astroturfed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really hope so. Sounds more interesting than being a boiling frog pot.

[–] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

To nuke, or not to nuke, that is the question.

Before? I'd say humanity and the planet are shoulder to shoulder. If it were before, the planet might have had a chance

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Saturday's mobilisation announcement came after President Macron held an emergency security cabinet meeting on Friday evening.

The incident took place at the Gambetta high school, which is located in the town centre, and police say the attacker shouted "Allah Akbar" - "God is great" in Arabic.

He has been named as 18-year-old Mohammed Mogouchkov, a former student at the school of Chechen origin who was the subject of "active monitoring" by France's General Directorate of Internal Security DGSI.

France's President Emmanuel Macron visited the school on Friday afternoon, and called on people to remain "united" and to "stand together" in the face of "the barbarity of Islamist terrorism."

Speaking in the courtyard of a building near the school where Friday morning's deadly attack took place, Macron said "the choice is made not to give in to terror, not to let anything divide us."

A 24-year-old man known to have been "radicalised" was arrested and placed in police custody for carrying a knife as he left a mosque in Limay on the outskirts of Paris.

"Religion of Peace" my Ass

fucking Terrorists

[–] Dra@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If terrorists decided to use "America" as branding, then saying "home of the brave my ass" would be as equally invalid a statement.

[–] Spzi@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

It's not a random coincidence. Islam, like Christianity, has plenty of calls to violence in scripture and culture.

For example, see article 7 of the Hamas founding charter:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

Other terror organizations like Boko Haram and Al Quaeda similarly quote other parts from the Quran. Because they can, because it's there.

So for your analogy to work, we would have to assume "America" has some inherently violent parts at it's core. Which it probably does.

In a true "Religion of Peace", extremists would have to invent things, not bend things, to justify violence.

Obligatory disclaimer, the overwhelming majority of Muslims (and Christians) are peaceful, decent people.

[–] Gerula@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But they don't, so you argument is invalid.

[–] Dra@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

... that doesn't invalidate my point at all - their choice of religious affiliation does not define the religion. Just as in my example, the theoretical "Terrorists of America" don't get to define what American values are, just because of their name. A counter group could take a similar "America" themed name with completely opposite values and objectives and it wouldn't mean jack shit.

[–] Gerula@lemmy.world -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ohhhh, we're discussing hypotheticals, sorry I thought you were serious.

Because then for sure you would have taken in consideration that religious affiliation, nationality and branding are pretty different things. The level of psychological involvement and the way these elements interact and define ones individual structure is quite incomparable. Usually for religious people (especially fundamenlists) religion does define their personal values, morality an so on. This IS the purpose of religion after all.

And then of course you would have taken in consideration that this is a conflict with mainly a religious conflict. Although you can say palestinians fight mainly for their land the other Muslim countries that support them have also religious motives.

And of course it's a fact that they didn't choose to take another religious affiliation or as you say a different brand.

[–] Dra@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't wish to be cruel or unpleasant and i appreciate the reply, but this really doesnt grasp what i outlined before

[–] Gerula@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok, then maybe I'm at fault and I didn't understand what you were trying to say.

[–] Dra@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago

Reasonable. Im sure my assertion wasnt 100% watertight

[–] dunestorm@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

No they are just animals, the religion part is just an excuse these pathetic animals use to justify their barbaric actions.
