I’d love for any military officer involved with this to explain why this isn’t a flagrant violation of the Posse Comitatus Act

This is why "Command said the latest military zone will be part of the Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso."

Effectively what happened was the land was turned into a part of the base. At every US base there is a line usually shortly before the gate, sometimes only at the fence line where you are considered "on base". Once you are on base military police can arrest you since they have jurisdiction on base. Kinda like how if you commit a crime in an unincorporated area, the sheriff will arrest you, not city cops since that's their jurisdiction.

Frankly though this type of move is unprecedented, as far as I know. While the fed can just give fed land to bases, I've never heard of it happening like this. It's a loophole to keep it legal on paper but not in spirit.

Never forget this: Everyone participating and 'just following orders' is also responsible, from the highest bureaucrats and generals to the lowest public servants and soldiers. Couldn't have a death camp without everyone greenlighting and then Private John Doe following orders and building it.

Good fucking luck, USA. And may god have mercy on your souls.

Some of the lowest public servants could be opposing things below the radar. Malicious compliance, intentional incompetence, etc. There's a reason that (outdated) sabotage handbook keeps going around, and there's certainly a lot of leaks and obvious fuckups in this government that may or may not be accidental. See: the DOJ court filing with an internal memo saying "lol this case is doomed"

But all of the pilots flying the planes? The agents rounding up innocents without due process? The judges and prosecutors and spokespeople and soldiers following unconstitutional orders? Absolutely fucked.

US service members participating in these actions are enemies of the state IMO. I would like to see them treated as such.

[–] Pistcow@lemm.ee 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Finally, we can end "thank you for your service " and get back to calling them baby killers. Ah yes, the time before 9-11.

[–] Guidy@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bullshit. You need to go farther back than that.

Baby killers are what fucktards called the barely-not-children who were drafted against their will to fight and die in Vietnam.

People really appreciated the troops who fought in the first Gulf Wars and helped our ally Kuwait after they were invaded. In 1990.

[–] Pistcow@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

I mean that's where it originated, for sure, it just stopped being used after 9-11.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is troubling in several ways. If it is allowed to continue then I foresee "military zones" on college campuses and many other places.

[–] orclev@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The loophole that seems to be being exploited is that they're allowed to redefine existing federal lands as military bases thus side stepping posse comitatis act. I don't think they can just declare any land (E.G. state owned or privately owned land) part of a military base and there's likely knock on effects from that as well. For instance I'd be surprised if there aren't various laws about who and how you're allowed to access "military bases" and therefore they can't just slap one in the middle of a campus at least not without opening a giant can of worms.

Step by step by little step.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even little steps.

This is happening much faster than I anticipated.

Arm yourselves.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

Not even halfway through year one, they have been planning for a long time.

Arm yourselves and practice

[–] myrmidex@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

Still waiting for that goose step though.
