๐Ÿ”—TL;DR As we need to take more concrete steps to improve the financial situation of the Foundation, we will be rolling out a freemium offer for the matrix.org homeserver users. The alternative is to turn off the server, which we want to avoid doing. The goal is for the most active users to support the cost of the service. Free users will have limits on how they can use the service (mostly around media). The change can be supported by any client with limited to no development. Premium plans will be rolled out over the summer, and we will be iterating on the exact scope in the first few weeks. The Homeserver Terms and Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly and deployed in the coming weeks.

People should stop using this corrupt central point of failure server, not fund it. Fund small distributed ones, pay 10 bucks to your nerdy friend to run Hetzner instance. Actually, yeah, I'm one of those nerdy friends, CoI, but really, the whole point of protocol is decentralization.

why is it corrupt?

I'm not really into Matrix and not familiar with how it operates, but... over 14% of the yearly costs of the Foundation is the Executive Director salary, while server infrastructure in comparison is only 20%? And they need more money to run the home instance?

Their goal last year was ยฃ900k I don't think they got it but even then that would place executive pay at ยฃ123k yearly salary. Doesn't seem excessive to me. More worried about their employees on average making around ยฃ45k.

Skilled technologist rarely work for free. Expecting a well run service by only hiring devs out of school willing to work for 100k a year is a pipe dream.

This kinda sucks. Should I move then to different matrix server?
