the startup sounds of the two worst versions of windows

"... up to 30% of our code is AI generated..."

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 67 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

I read through these and it's 80% AI crap that no one asked for. New features? Recall and copilot trash. Bugs? Problems with Recall and copilot. I'm so glad I switched to Linux some months ago. If Microsoft doesn't see reason soon, they might just kill windows.

[–] ToadOfHypnosis@lemm.ee 13 points 21 hours ago

With their philosophy on privacy, I hope they do. The more people use Linux instead of Windows, the more developers will clean bugs up.

[–] Pirate@feddit.org 5 points 18 hours ago

Wouldn't know. Left Windows behind and now it's someone else's problem.

they might just kill windows.

One might start thinking it's intentional indeed. I imagine Azure is their new cash cow, and perhaps MS is pivoting.

[–] ToadOfHypnosis@lemm.ee 10 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

It’s not. It’s silicone valley’s insane strategy to hype tech to juice stock prices then build to meet the hype. Instead of doing the logical thing - build useful features and let them become popular to bring the hype. These companies are way more focused on wall street hype than their actual customers reactions to their products.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

They're probably not pivoting but in FY2023 Azure made up 38% of their revenue, followed by Office 365 at 23%. That's a lot of cloud service revenue.

Is it sustainable? Honestly, it might. They sell a lot of stuff under the Azure umbrella and corporations lap that shit up. (Seriously; my employer is about ready to hire consultants to come up with additional eggs they can put in that particular basket.)

Here's my source; I couldn't be arsed to look it up in MSFT's statements directly.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - business majors are the scum of the earth

[–] Kidplayer_666@lemm.ee 0 points 20 hours ago

They’re not! Dave is…. Business majors are just above Dave

The won't kill Windows until there is some alternative for consuments and no, Linux ain't it...mostly because there is still a big faith in common folk that Linux is some arcane tech. Which is pretty much proven in their opion when they try to use it, cause they try to use it like Windows.

And no, Lemmings don't count, most of us have some kind of dev experience, be it professional or hobbyist.

I disagree that Linux isn't an alternative but even if it wasn't, MacOS is.

Seems like Microsoft doesn't mind having their userbase reduce another 20% and giving it to their main competitor.

Maybe this time they'll change their ways.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Ugh at work I was forced to use MacOS and i find i3 + arch way more intuitive than that.

Very nice eye candy but every keyboard shortcut is stupid on MacOS, productivity is ruined

Also window tiling is stupid too on MacOS

[–] Pirate@feddit.org 1 points 13 hours ago

I understand, but my point is that MacOS is more than serviceable as a work-focused operating system. It is more than capable to replace Windows as long as you're willing to accept a different work flow.

If you're already on Linux then great, stay there. But the average consumer wants something easier to use, and MacOS is easy. More importantly, it doesn't treat you like garbage like Windows does.

Speaking of, this video came to mind.

Your argument is more out of date than Vista. Windows is not the default because people like their software, or would choose it over anything else. It's because they've positioned themselves as the default monopoly since the goddamn 1980s.

To see what happens when Microsoft has to compete on quality of software, just ask yourself why Copilot and Recall aren't being rolled out on Windows phones.

[–] Bristingr@lemm.ee 4 points 18 hours ago

25% of the world still uses Windows 7. People aren't going to switch to Linux when they have an OS that just works.

[–] rumba@piefed.zip 24 points 19 hours ago

I bet the did it internally for April fools and it's just getting out to the public.

[–] lemimmi@feddit.org 16 points 22 hours ago

It's not a bug, it's a feature :D Would be nice to be an option

[ADDED] This week’s flight comes with a delightful blast from the past and will play the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. We’re working on a fix.

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 14 points 22 hours ago

I'd say "these jokes write themselves" but, well, Microsoft even took that away... It's a comedy bluescreen.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

C'mon, people... File versioning.
