Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Trying to ban a celebration of love. 🀑🀑🀑

These politicians should have become comedians, or floormats, or anything useful.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I think the transition from comedian to politician is more successful. Ukraine has done well by it.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 3 points 13 hours ago

When you start as a good person, you likely end up a good politician (with ethics and values that benefit your people).

Most politicians start as bad people, and just become worse.

This is how protests work : they simply cannot arrest tens of thousands of people.

[–] sip@programming.dev 4 points 20 hours ago

yeah, but they do go after people that organized the protest and arrest them.

When will the Hungarians finally drop the fucking clown Orban into the Donau (Danube) River?

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (1 children)

people who dont live here do not know how fucked up is it. every media is owned by orban, and the countryside folk are mostly old people who dont use the internet, so their only news source is straight up propaganda.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Genuine question: do you think eliminating Orban from the political scene will seriously change things?

I lived in Hungary and interact often with Hungarian expats and I have a very negative outlook if no real cultural change is enacted.

As you say, the countryside people are just like Italian and even Danish ones, and served propaganda daily, but the level of nationalism I experienced in Hungary from almost all sides of the political spectrum tells me there is something deeper at play.

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Hungarian nationalism/patriotism is so fucked up. They are straight brainwashed into believing they are a superior race above all other peoples.
"Our language is the oldest inhuman history"
"This country used to be 10 times its size, they stole it from us"
"in Asia kids learn in school that theyre descendants of Hungarians"

Actual quotes from my hungarian family. Truly alarming.

I have been in Opusztaszer. That place is hell to me.

[–] Bravo@eviltoast.org 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I find it plausible that OrbΓ‘n and the average OrbΓ‘n voter sees the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a godsent opportunity for Hungarian revanchism on parts of Ukrainian territory.

Please don't throw trash in rivers.

[–] stormeuh@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure he's biodegradable

[–] Mavytan@feddit.nl 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Shit is also biodegradable, still not great to have in the river (in large quantities)

("The mayor announces that beer will be brewed on Wednesday, therefore beginning Tuesday people are not to shit in the brook")

[–] Mavytan@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago

That's an awesome sign!

Has Fidesz claimed that the crowd is photoshopped yet? It's what the populists always do in Germany.

The 1% is a lot more people than I realized.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It's just George Soros, all the way. Different genders, clothing, but still just Soros

[–] helmet91@lemmy.world 69 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As a wise person said not long ago: "the regime is trying to appear strong as granite, but in reality it's made of toilet paper".

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago (14 children)
