Link to full list: https://sanctions.nazk.gov.ua/en/boycott/

With Unilever, Mondelez and Procter & Gamble on that list, shopping for groceries and hygiene products might get complicated if you actually want to boycott all of them.

Feels weird to not see Nestlé on a list of big (food) companies doing questionable things.

Mondelez and Unilever has their fingers in in so much stuff that even if you're trying to boycott them you probably aren't.

For reference here is an incomplete list of Mondelez brands:

  • 5 Star
  • Cadbury
  • Clorets
  • Côte d'Or
  • Daim
  • Freia
  • Halls
  • Marabou (chocolate)
  • Maynards Bassetts
  • Milka
  • Nabisco
  • Philadelphia Cream Cheese
  • Royal Baking Powder Company
  • Sour Patch Kids
  • Stride (gum)
  • Tang
  • Toblerone
  • Twisties

  • Vizzolini

Some major subcompanies:

  • Kraft Foods - All the groceries they produce
  • Nabisco - Belvita, Chips Ahoy!, Nutter Butter, Oreo, Ritz Crackers, Shredded Wheat, Triscuit, Wheat thins, etc.

And much more.

Unilever brands they own or control part of(Will be very incomplete, since they own an insane amount of companies):

  • Ben & Jerry's
  • Breyers
  • Calippo
  • Fudgesicle
  • Klondike
  • Popsicle
  • Weis
  • Wall's

  • Knorr
  • Hellman's
  • Maizena

Loads more, in addition to many of them, like Elide Beuaty, have multiple sub-companies/brands.

Ben & Jerry's was shocking. I don't eat their ice cream or follow them, but from their online presence it seemed like they were privately owned by the "good guys."

Is Patagonia still safe?

You hate to be an alcohol producer when the russia sanctions start

[–] tal@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Ehhh...I dunno. Russia also produces grain, and I bet that means that they produce alcohol.

goes looking

https://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore?country=186&queryLevel=location&product=837&year=2021&productClass=HS&target=Product&partner=undefined&startYear=undefined

https://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore?country=186&queryLevel=location&product=837&year=2021&tradeDirection=import&productClass=HS&target=Product&partner=undefined&startYear=undefined

Okay, so based on liquors, in 2021, $212 million in exports, $832 million in imports.

Beer is $141 million in exports, $361 million in imports.

Wine is $11.5 million in exports, $842 million in imports.

So, yeah, you're right, I guess -- unless I've missed some sort of category of drink -- that Russia's definitely a net importer of alcoholic beverages.

[–] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Who tf is importing Russian wine? They should be in the Hague just for trying to push that on the world.

https://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/explore?country=186&queryLevel=location&product=833&year=2021&productClass=HS&target=Product&partner=undefined&startYear=undefined

This is for 2021; I suspect that a few numbers have likely changed significantly.

  • 42.75% of Russian wine exports went to Ukraine.

  • 11.52% to China.

  • 11.12% of Kazakhstan

  • 8% to Belarus

  • 5.22% to Latvia

I'm gonna stop at 5%, but you can go look at the treemap if you want more detail (like I said, though, the entire exports in 2021 were $11.5 million, so it's not a whole lot...I would guess that the numbers could be pretty noisy from year to year).

It's only 165k but who on earth is importing Russian wine in France?

[–] tal@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

guesses

Russian restaurants in France?

googles

La Cantine Russe

European,Russian, Eastern European

googles for a wine menu

Yeah, they have Russian wines listed. Under the champagne section, but I'm assuming that that's a listing error, given that France has a bit of a spat with Russia over what constitutes champagne.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57733684

France has hit back at a new Russian law ordering French champagne makers to label their bottles as sparkling wine.

France has strict rules protecting its bubbly, meaning to be called champagne it must be from the French region that shares the name.

But under Russia's new law, only local producers can call their drinks "shampanskoye" - the Russian equivalent of champagne.

France's main champagne industry group called the law "unacceptable".

Having had a decent amount of Chinese wine, all I can say is Russian can't be worse?

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe it is code for something less vile, like irradiated soil.

[–] SheeEttin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

That doesn't count alcohol produced and consumed domestically. While they might import a lot, they might produce more and drink it themselves.

[–] tal@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, true, but I wasn't trying so much to find whether there was a lot of alcohol being consumed. My aim was more to see whether Russia was a net importer or exporter, since the claim was that alcohol producers [outside Russia] would be upset with the Russian sanctions, that it would cut the producers off from the Russian market.

However, if Russia were a net exporter and you are an alcohol producer, then it'd be removing more competition than it would be closing off markets; producers would likely benefit.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I see not too many people outside of Russia are desperate enough to drink Russian wine, but more than I thought.

What I'm feeling

It's never been so easy

When I'm dreaming

Summer Offensive dreaming

(Fuck Barcadi for that stance)

[–] Kamikazimatt@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 year ago (30 children)

Which is crazy considering the Bacardi family had to escape from Cuba because of Castro’s takeover. So you’d think if any company would be against a hostile takeover, it would be them.

[–] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

Well its easy. That time it affected them. This time it's not. Also money.
