Also, they censor the words "nuclear war" for some reason I can't imagine.

I believe nuclear war was censored because the song came out in 2003.

FCC had temporarily banned a whole bunch of songs from live radio broadcast after 9/11 (Learning to Fly by Tom Petty, literally everything from RATM, many more) and in 2003 a while lot of Americans were terrified that Saddam would nuke us, or Israel, or terrorists would get a suitcase nuke or assemble a dirty bomb and blow up Chicago or something, as basically every journalism outfit in America was credulously reporting everything Bush admin officials were claiming about threats (which they knew were of dubious legitimacy), while the Bush admin itself was basically fabricating a claim to invade Iraq.

The uncensored version released in their album, but the music video and radio versions was censored likely so it could reach a larger audience on MTV and be allowed to be broadcast by the FCC.

Thank you for the explanation as a non American I was really confused it wasn't censored when originally released here and even caused something of a stir with them doing interviews on breakfast tv talking about gaybriham lincon

Amen brother. Exactly how it was/is

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That makes sense. 9/11 made the media go crazy for a while.

Not that weird also. Its a very complex topic. Post you are commenting on is 100%>right though

I love Electric Six! My favorite musical fun fact of all time is that Jack White did back up vocals for their song Danger! High Voltage

When I initially heard that song I instantly recognized his voice, then later on heard or read something where somebody in the band said that no, it wasn’t Jack White, it was just someone else that happened to sound like him. Then, years later, I read or heard something else that said that, no, they actually joked/lied about that, it really was Jack White. Pretty sure it’s him, but that factoid has messed with me for so long.

Hahahahahah I covered this with a band at one gig on a lark. It... was not well received. 🤣

If you ever get a chance to see them live, do it. Dick Valentine (the singer) is super nice and puts on an amazing show. They travel all over and usually play at small venues, so tickets are reasonably priced.

I'm not super far from Michigan (west-central Indiana), so maybe they'll play nearby sometime. Thanks!

Looks like they're in there UK for the rest of the year. They tour pretty often, so you'll definitely get a chance. They used to come to the Boston area twice a year for like 5+ years. Amazing every time.

Electric Six is a weird band to me...some of their songs I love ("I Buy the Drugs," "Hello, I See You") and some I haaate ("Gay Bar," "Dance Commander") and I can't explain why one works for me and the other does. My wife thinks they sound exactly the same...I'm hard-pressed to disagree. But the ones I like I really really like.

Same with me, they have some really awesome songs (Gay Bar, Danger, Synthesizer, a few others), but then a large part of their stuff is just really sub-par drivel, and I have trouble reconciling those two facts. I can’t believe it’s the same people that made all the same songs, did a key member of the band leave at some point?

I went to see them in my old hometown in West Virginia and apparently one of the members is from here. Anyway they talked so much shit about my state between every song. Far beyond the point of ribbing. I walked out. Hope they made a lot of money off the 30 of us that came to see them.

I also love Dance Commander and might listen to Synthesizer on loop sometimes..... Just a happy song.

Radio message from HQ: "Dance commander, we love you."
