I owned a white original model PSP and that thing never looked clean after the first week no matter what I did.

Honestly people who go all white on everything kinda terrify me...

White: ✋

Transparent: 👈

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

transparent custom shells already exist. the problem is, that transparent plastics tend to be more brittle than solid colors

[–] Nindelofocho@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Ive done a shell swap on my steam deck and while Its worth it and it looks amazing it was a PROCESS because you have to unglue the screen and the touch pads (if you want to swap those too) you basically disassemble the entire device

[–] maplebar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I'd love to do it myself, but once I saw that you have to unglue the screen I decided that I have enough projects going on right now. lol

[–] Scribbd@feddit.nl 3 points 3 days ago

Did this too. Can confirm, it was quite the process.

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yup. Was SUPER tedious and time consuming. Worth it tho.

[–] xthexder@l.sw0.com 5 points 2 days ago

There's actually an official transparent case Steam Deck too. They had the limited edition OLED when it first came out.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 35 points 3 days ago (4 children)

white plastics have a history of becomig yellow

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's called a patina, and it's an intended side-effect of repeated use that increases performance.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 days ago

ah, just like how cam out is a feature of phillips screws that improves the spinning performance of the driver

[–] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Ngl a 90s PC beige steam deck would be amazing to run emudeck on

[–] coronach@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 3 days ago

That might be an appealing retro aesthetic to have!

[–] magikmw@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ngl I was convinced for a good while it's mostly a result of smoking near them.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

I mean that will do it too, but it will be sticky and stain your skin and also smell awful

[–] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 55 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Fuck, I just bought my OLED model a week ago.

[–] M600@lemmy.world 86 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The white looks, cool but I think it will look dirty a bit faster. Also, the white boarder may be a bit distracting

I always prefer the dark colors around screens.

[–] MarauderIIC@dormi.zone 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah - my first thought was literally "that will look dirty quick"

[–] TwinTusks@bitforged.space 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It'll be yellow in few months.

[–] ThoGot@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I doubt that to be honest. White plastic got better since the 90s

[–] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Unless it can repel Cheeto dust that thing is changing colours.

real men eat blue takis. 🧏🤫

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You can still shell swap or vinyl wrap your OLED, replace joysticks and buttons, etc. It's cooler to customize it in that way imo

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 36 points 3 days ago

The notion of getting a special edition white one, then swapping the shell to a custom black is funny.

[–] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Idk where you live, but a number of countries give you a 14 day cool-off period where you can return purchases for any reason.

[–] Scio@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Eternally thankful this isn't a rerun of the translucent black edition. I too got my first OLED delivered last week.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Man, I couldn't get one over the fear of it getting yellowed but it looks cleannn, love the grey buttons

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you already own a steamdeck they sell replacement shells. Be forewarned though installation is absolutely insane and takes a loooot of time. I've had white installed on mine for about a year and have had no issues with it yellowing.

[–] knightly@pawb.social 1 points 2 days ago

The back half of the shell is easy though, I swapped mine with a transluscent purple backplate a few months back. ^_^

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

I thought this wasn't really a thing anymore with modern white plastic, no? It'll still get more visibly dirty though.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago

As sexy as it looks I feel it might look dirty fast.

[–] Nilz@sopuli.xyz 17 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Finally a good solution to my white sd-card. It looks so bad in my black Steam Deck.

[–] vodka@lemm.ee 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I solved this issue with the magic of a black whiteboard marker.

[–] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I tried this but even permanent marker kept rubbing off

[–] Xatolos@reddthat.com 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

White out marker the Steam Deck?

[–] Nilz@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago

This is genius

[–] lud@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago

I barely notice it.

The SD card slot is pointing down when I use it.

I also have a case which makes it even harder to see.
