Hi there. I've never modded a community before, and I've only seriously been in to shmups for about a year, so there's a ton I still have to learn on both subjects. Feel free to use this thread to make suggestions or requests, I'm happy to accommodate them if I can.

Good luck, have fun, and welcome to !shmups@lemmus.org!

Here we go! c/shmups' first ever game of the month is Mushihimesama, by Cave.

It's most accessible on Steam, but if you've got a copy on Switch (now deslisted from the eshop), Xbox 360, or PS2, we'll take all versions. (Even emulation, but due to legal issues, we won't be able to directly assist with that.)

So let's go for it! This is meant to be fun and casual, so don't worry about getting top rank, just do your best!

Progress posts, score posts -- all Mushihimesama content is welcome and encouraged! Let's us know how the grind is going! Share strats and routes! Ask your fellow shmuppers for help or encouragement.

Top scores and 1CCs in each category (Novice, 1.5, Black Label, etc.) will be decided on April 31st, and featured in the sidebar

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the beetles!

My take: It would be nice if this collection contained everything ever associated with Gradius, but: 1) The Gradius franchise is HUGE, and porting every game into a collection would take years, and cost a lot more money; and let's face it shooters are a niche product, even famous ones like Gradius. And 2) There's every possibility that -- depending on how well Origins sells -- there will be another collection eventually.

From what I've seen, this package will be well worth the money for me. But we'll see how it goes.

Cool idea! But I'd give up almost instantly if I tried something like this.

After a long hiatus, Shmup Junkie has posted a new video to his channel, featuring fellow YouTuber Johnnygrafx's run-down of underrated PC Engine/TurboGrafx shmups.

And more big news, looks like SJ is working on his own video right now, featuring shmups on the Saturn. Excited to see what he puts out!

This one's kind of special. From the Retronauts news piece:

What's this? A horizontally-scrolling sci-fi shooting game, originally developed by Compile for Sega's SG-1000/3000 console in 1985 and ported to MSX the following year; the basic shoo-and-dodge gameplay is augmented by a weapon power-up system that sees the player collecting numbered chips to advance a lengthy power gauge and gain access to the various shot upgrades (or downgrades) that correspond to each unmarked square on the gauge.

Why should I care? Very rarely did Compile attempt the horizontally-scrolling format, but all signatures are here: best-case-scenario technical performance, a risk-reward about exploiting the invincibility gained from grabbing chips, and stage/weapon/enemy volume that verges into overkill territory.

Hi folks! So, Lemmy doesn't seem to have a specific polling function, so we're going to have to improvise. Here are the rules:

  1. We'll be using this sticky thread to nominate games for April.

  2. To nominate a game, post a message to this thread with it's name (and any other info you want to include).

  3. To vote for a game, upvote the message that names your game.

  4. At 12:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on 28 of March, the game with the most upvotes will be the winner!

On April 1st we'll post another sticky thread for the Game of the Month! Depending on what gets picked, we can decide whether we'll be doing a score attack, 1-credit-completion contest or etc. Never done this before, kind of winging it, here!

@hobs had a great idea (sorry it's taken me so long to get around to it!): what if we do a caravan event? We all settle on a specific game and do like a score attack on it and post our results?

It'd just be a friendly event, a community thing where we can encourage each others' progress and celebrate our achievements.

If people are interested, we could even do a game of the month sort of thing, like some other comms do. Interested in your thoughts either way!

Hey folks!

I used to change the banner art for the Community pretty frequently, but I've kind of backed away from that. I wasn't sure if people found it annoying. I was only using pics that I found interesting, which isn't really fair.

So, does anyone have any requests or artwork they'd like to see on the /c? Let me know either here or at @sundray@mastodon.social!

You might be able to tell it's been a lazy Sunday afternoon in my neck of the woods -- I'm just watching YouTube and waiting for my lasagna to finish baking. But still, if you aren't familiar with the Neo-Geo's stable of high quality shooters, this vid is a pleasant introduction!

I actually find it quite challenging to keep up with upcoming STG releases -- that's what makes these regular "most anticipated"-type videos so valuable to me.

Irem Collection vol. 3
Revolgear Zero
Irena Genesis Metal Fury
P-47 II
ZPF
Cotton Reboot High Tension & Cotton Fantasy 2
