Reddit Migration

I run a decent sized sub. I've noticed the last few days that all my sticky posts that say where else you can find us are getting mass reported. I usually have like 6 reports a week. I'm getting a report on every post made that gets the sticky all of a sudden. I just took the word "Lemmy" out and we'll see if that changes. Anyone else noticing something similar if you still have an account?

Personally I'm waiting for the 30th. I have a dream of crashing their servers with account deletion requests

A ton of moderators have been making changes to their subreddits' rules (e.g., only allowing certain posts, going NSFW, loosening rules a ton) to protest without getting kicked out. Do you think this strategy of turning a subreddit into shitposts is effective or not?

I'm curious to see what the people in this community think, so please share your thoughts.

My opinion is that these forms of protest, while fun, don't actually help. Most bring more attention and activity to the sub if anything, giving Reddit more ad revenue (which is really all they care about). And the few that are actually harmful (e.g., allowing NSFW content) are being shut down by Reddit.

It's been made clear that Reddit doesn't care about what its users want and is willing to reorder, remove, and shadowban moderators to protect profits, so I'd like to see more people moving away from the platform. Even if the alternatives still need development and are missing important features, mods should start making plans to establish communities outside of Reddit.

I can't find an example post now, but I have seen people link to Reddit and it takes them to a wrapper or something

So the mods on r/PoliticalHumor have made E V E R Y O N E subscribed to the subreddit a mod.

Like many other subreddits, r/Finland is allowing its users to vote for whether or not they should a) reopen as normal, b) remain closed, or c) remain in protest mode.

However, the admins just sent them a nastygram essentially saying that's not allowed:

Your community sees well over 2 million unique visitors each month. Allowing a small segment of those users to make a decision for a community forever does not make sense. There are a huge number of people that use this space now and who will in the future

Polling to close is not a viable option that will return a result that resolves this situation

However, mods can also see traffic stats, which show them as closer to 20k uniques per month. My guess is that this is a copy/pasted message and a whole bunch of subreddits are getting this notice.

I thought this was a particularly nasty new development, since up until now the excuse has been that we can't let these Landed Gentry dictate the state of our subreddits, but now they're explicitly saying that they also don't care about how the users of a subreddit vote either.

Hey, I hope it's ok to post something like this here. I just wanted to say thanks for the people here^^ A long time ago I joined Reddit and tried to post, comment and communicate about stuff I liked. Only now I noticed how much I became a lurker over the time because of the negativity at Reddit. Snappy comments, no real feedback but hate, sometimes even borderline insults... After nuking and deleting my Reddit account and switching to lemmy I noticed how much I missed it. People here are way more friendly and communicate politely. At least for now... I've been thinking a lot about why I decided to come here and I know it started off as a "they can't make me use their shitty app!" while simultaneously using test apps that crash and navigating less content than Reddit. What is the primary motivation for all of this anymore? Is anger enough of a motivation to keep people away from a platform long term?

I have a feeling that most folks are more loyal to their communities than they are the company themselves - meaning that no matter how bad the corporation is, sacrificing what they truly care about is not really worth it no matter how poorly they are treated.

If the community goes away, THEN reddit goes away.

But if the only way to access their community is through some shitty app, I don't see it stopping many people.

the OP asked how are they gonna remove them all, so I replied they'll run a query for terms like "fuck spez". only to find my comment invisible, because they're already blocking it. spez protective word filter, it's active right now.

While everyone is, understandably, upset that reddit has removed the mod teams in a few of the protesting subs - I think this is a prime opportunity to flood equivalent magazines/communities with content that would have potentially been added there. Be the change we want to see here, sort of thing.

What should I do now lol

I see a lot of comments pointing out bugs and saying something along the lines like "they need to fix this ASAP, otherwise... something something".

As a software developer myself (not in the fediverse), I can tell you one thing:

Keep in mind that all of this literally escalated pretty quickly, and no one was prepared for that. What started out as a hobby project of some enthausiasts, quickly turned into a high demand over the course of a few days.

Having hundreds of enthusiasts use a software is different than having thousends of "average" people using it. 100 users won't detect many bugs, and if they do, they're more tolerant since they know it's all volunteering. But thousands of users will detect even more bugs that no one bothered to deal before.

Once the userbase grows and the demands are clear enough, this should be tackled, eventually.

So yeah, hang in there.

Interested in getting a feel for what people may be likely to do IF reddit reverses their decision regarding API access, or reduces access fees to a reasonable level and 3rd party apps remain sustainable.

While I know the chances of this are extreeeemely slim, until 1st July there is an ever so slight chance this could still happen.

From my perspective, the community harm is done, and those who have left prior to July 1 have left due to principles, not because their app stopped working. As such, I'd be inclined to think most of those migrators would stay here in the fediverse.

But would we see a mass exodus back to reddit if the changes were undone? It's easy to say no, but if it went back to operations as relatively normal, it may be easy to justify going back for some users.

I'd like to think I wouldn't go back. I've deleted content and account from reddit. I'll be happy here so long as there is enough userbase for some discussion.

I checked the /r/blind sub and they have started their own Lemmy instance. Edited so Blind users can read it.

Since the news broke regarding the forthcoming changes to reddit’s API and the impact that will have on the third party apps and tools many of us rely upon the mods here at r/blind have been working on an accessible option for those who either cannot or will not be staying on reddit. As talk of alternatives like mastodon, lemmy, and the like have increased we decided that it would be best to reveal what we have been working on, hence this post. Several days ago we shared this with those of you on our Discord server and have been asking for feedback.

This project is by no means finished or polished, and is currently operating on development backend code and a beta UI to allow for access to still unreleased features that our community needs such as up/down votes displaying state changes, and nested comments, read this as there are and will be bugs and outstanding accestsibility problems. However, the advantage of this platform is we control the servers, the UI, and can fix accessibility concerns ourselves instead of relying on a for profit company or the generosity of app developers to do it for us, not that the latter is unappreciated.

So please be understanding of the above and we hope those of you who decide to join and see what we have done so far for all of us, and please report problems as you find them.

Most people aren't even thinking of moving to reddit alternatives. Users have a lot of power in this situation. Just move your community to Lemmy or Kbin. It's not that hard.

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down.

The best way to make sure things go your way? Vote with your wallet, or in this case your voice. Don't speak on reddit. Devote more time helping out the alternatives grow and flourish. And as much as it is a meme, touching some grass can help your mental fortitude.

If you absolutely 100% need to interact with reddit, I suggest installing a redirector addon (such as privacy redirect or... redirector) that can link to a teddit or libreddit instance. Or archiving it with wayback/archive.is/ghostarchive.
