Useful for large rooms — hard to install outlets in the middle of the floor (and dangerous). Plus you usually want the mistletoaster to hang not float up.
I've seen this type of outlet in the middle of large rooms:
Are you sure it's more dangerous? Doesn't the cover negate all risk?
Not sure I've ever seen those plugs in the States
