As automation/robotics/ai get better, humans transform from an asset to a liability. Fewer people means fewer protestors/rioters/revolutionaries/universal income recipients/whatever.

Were not that part yet. We're at the part where they need an ever growing youth paying into taxes to support promises made to the old and consume ever more to keep stock prices going up. What you describe is a few generations away still.
