Summary

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced she will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration, stating, "I don’t celebrate rapists," referencing Trump’s history of sexual assault allegations.

While Trump has never been convicted of rape, a jury found him civilly liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll.

Ocasio-Cortez also criticized TikTok for crediting Trump with restoring service in the U.S., calling it a propaganda move.

She warned of social media platforms being weaponized by right-wing interests, claiming they are contributing to the rise of "21st-century fascism" under the incoming administration.

Per usual, she's probably our best hope of a high profile progressive in office (and a potential do-over of 2016 when we didn't get Bernie if Dems get some sense).

Right on the money too about social media. I think I'm more concerned about that than I am about Trump himself. I really don't want Zoomers to end up the next conservative generation; like the Boomers and Gen Xers who suck Reagan dick after the 80s because their misunderstanding of what actually happened during his presidency. Confirmation bias is strong and that'll fuck the US long after Trump dies.

She's gonna have some Hillary-like issues, in that the GOP has spent a decade demonizing her already.

Obama hit them hard because they didn't see him coming. He went from a relative unknown (on the national stage) to the Presidency in about 12 seconds, and they had been prepping for a fight against Hillary even then.

[–] ShadowWalker@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago

The issue was that Hilary didn't have any strong defenders.

Trump has proven that being hated isn't fatal to politics so long as there are others who love you.

Americans want passion and someone who is willing to fight for them rather than the status quo.

Dems would rather sell us to fascism than put a progressive in office.

They need to protect her at all costs, because they will kill her.

This isn't like a threat or a joke or something.

Look at Fred Hampton.

Look at MLK. Look at Malcolm...

Look at RFK. The original. The dad. No brain worm (that we know about). Side note, there's an HBO documentary series about RFK that's fantastic. He was one of the good ones. Things might have turned out very different if not for Sirhan^2. Fucking tragedy.

I truly fear for AOC.

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 13 hours ago

I really hope AOC knows how to defend herself. And owns a gun for if someone breaks into her house. She needs to be safe.

[–] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Please don't mention Bernie anymore. They postponed him and now he's just too old, we need to stop with the old people. AOC is a great choice, and there needs to be full backing on that because the old corporate guard has some loser in mind, I assume.

Probably Kamala again.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Probably Kamala again.

NOW is the time to change this. Do not waste it.

I think I am done voting for liberals. They come up with endless excuses why they cannot help the working class and when finally do anything it is to fund Israel's genocide or to give massive wins to Republicans by banning Tiktok the day before Trump was sworn in just so he could unban it.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 2 points 13 hours ago

that's why we need progressives instead of liberals

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Gen X'er here... When '88 rolled around and Poppy Bush was running was my first election.

Kept asking the "greatest" and boomers: "So, wait, either he's lying about his involvement in Iran/Contra, is dirty as fuck and shouldn't be elected, or he legit had no clue, wasn't involved, and is incompetent for a former CIA director and shouldn't be elected. Which is it?"

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The male zoomers are hardcore Trumpers. Uninformed from shitty social media takes and no understanding of civics. The damage is already done.

[–] KinglyWeevil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Don't discount the damage to our social cohesiveness done by corporations monetizing literally everything.

Social networks and dating apps, on top of the removal of most avenues toward middle class incomes, have led to an entire generation with few employment or romance prospects, creating a loneliness epidemic.

This gives shit bags like andrew tate a crack to worm into and create an incel/fascist incubation machine.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gen Xers who suck Reagan dick after the 80s because their misunderstanding of what actually happened during his presidency.

So, like, one guy.

[–] CarrierLost@infosec.pub 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah dude, I’m fairly confident most of us dislike Reagan a fucking lot.

At least, most people in my generation that I hang out with, so it could be self selecting.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You'd be surprised how many people still seem to believe in Reaganomics, and far too many either forgot about Iran-Contra or still believe he was the deal maker that saved the day.

But yes, probably more boomers than Gen X. X is in a weird spot, cause the people I'm thinking of are borderline Boomers and mostly just aren't well informed.

[–] CarrierLost@infosec.pub 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You’re probably right. I’ll admit it’s a self selection bias because I’m old enough to have made up my mind not to associate with people that have fundamentally different beliefs than I do.

So there are likely a lot of them, but none of them are MY friends, so it’s easy enough to believe in my little sphere.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not exactly proud of my millennial cohort as a whole. I think on average they're ok (Obama was a good vote and a real primary in '08) but it's not like they don't have their own brain rot. It's good to have your own cool bubble to be with, though.

[–] Geobloke@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago

Hold onto her, after Trump has pardoned the Jan 6 people as well as the proud boy leader he's proven that it isn't a crime if you do it in Trumps name
