I've never thought to ask before, but is "nightstand" just American for "bedside table"?

The difference is that Americans put them in the closet during the day. Rich Americans swap for their Daystands.

Obviously, it'd be weird if you didn't.

The difference in words is that the Americans needed a hat rack next to the bed to hang up their guns, whilst the Brits needed a table to lay down their knives.
