The guy that invented the GIF said it is pronounced Jif. And of course that is a common pronunciation for “gi” words, like gin, giraffe, ginger, giant, ginseng, and so on.

And before you say “but the g stands for graphics” tell me about what the p in MPEG stands for.

I'm just gonna continue pronouncing it whatever way the person I'm speaking to gets annoyed by.

Gig Git Girl Gibbon Gift Gill Giddy Gigahertz Gimmick Gizzard

And none of that changes the “ji” is a common pronunciation of gi. Sure, go is the hard g, but y’all act like gif is the only word with the soft g.

The true stupid move is demanding that there is only one pronunciation. Like many worlds with variations, both are acceptable.

[-] CarlsIII@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Ok but like, pronouncing it like jif is dumb

[-] derf82@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I think the hard g sounds harsh and I hate it.

I don't care what the creator says. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seriously, he waited an awfully long time to announce how to say Gif. He clearly did it just do fuck with people. Just pronounce it however you want.
