I grew up with Pokémon red and gold. In those games, you can kind of just ignore the story and play through the game.

At some point Pokémon seemed to switch, and have so much more dialog forced upon you, especially in the early game.

When did this start? Was it with Pokémon X and Y or did it come later? I know Sun and Moon felt that way to me.

Thanks! I plan to replay them up until that point.

A follow up question, I’ve never played diamond/pearl. Should I play the switch or the ds versions?

I've only played the DS versions, so can't say, but I would presume the Switch versions fix the most notorious problems (like the inexplicably slow Surf speed) so assuming they don't also do something stupid and unnecessary like nerf the difficulty or rewrite the dialogue, they'd likely be best.

Thanks! I wasn’t aware of the issues, so I’ll watch a comparison video when I get to that point.

If you're up for emulating anyway I'd recommend Platinum. The Switch remakes were mostly faithful to the original D/P but not the improvements from Platinum. They do not fix many problems, and IMO they feel absolutely horrible to play.

Thanks! I just checked comparison a of the games and I was happy to see that platinum fixed the surf speed.

I’m totally going to go that route.

I just need one more badge in gold? Elite 4, then johto

After that, I’ll do emerald, then platinum.

I've played through both. The switch versions are very faithful to the originals, with a few things that stood out to me as different:

The bikes are implemented differently, so some of the bike puzzles can be easily cheesed.

Fairy type is present.

The underground has been redesigned to focus on catching Pokemon instead of multiplayer.

Elite 4 rematches are much more difficult.

There are a variety of small improvements throughout the game otherwise, so I think it would be fine to play these ones. If you want to experience both versions of gen 4 in some way, you could also play Platinum on the DS.

Thanks, I think I’ll go the platinum route.
