Not only did he steal it from Heinlein, the part that makes me irrationally angry is that he claimed the term came from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

If it makes you feel any better, he didn't steal it directly from Heinlein.

He stole it from his ex Grimes.

Yes, grok is a verb coined by Heinlein in Stranger in a strange land, which is a great book in my opinion.
