On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.
Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.
The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.
On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.
On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.
The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

What if it isn't some psychological object permancance thing that makes peekaboo fun and kids just laugh because it's funny to see someone cover their eyes and say a funny word while smiling at you. Also like also the whole rest of you is there it's not that hard to tell that you haven't actually gone
Little kids' brains just ain't that advanced. They don't start patching stuff til later. You can watch kids get upset they can't push a cart at the same time they're standing on a carpet that prevents them from moving it, or get tricked into thinking they're getting more of something by just pouring it into a bigger glass. Peekaboo is part of the training that things still exist even if you don't see them, plus it's usually an adult with a goofy smile that does it and babies like it when you smile at them.
Yeh igi. I was just thinking that, infants of the same age that peekaboo also appeals to would have probably already learnt that, for example, mum's hands are mum, or mum's arms are mum. So if mum blocks her face with her hands, the child probably still knows mum is there... right? (realising now also that my understanding of peekaboo was reductive to just the 'hide face behind hands' version not the 'hide whole self behind object version' which is probably more compelling for the kids-learning-permanence hypothesis)
Youd be surprised, we don't really differentiate between self and not self when we're fresh. Babies take a while before they can tell the difference between themselves and mom or whoever and it takes even longer to put together moms arm is part of mom. Takes even longer to develop a theory of mind and that it's possible for other people to not know the things that you do know. Human babies are like this partially because we're born so much more premature compared to other mammals, we gotta finish a lot more development outside of the uterus which is why baby development has so many weird steps.
And even better... YOU too were like this lol
Damb so you're telling me my nephew actually thinks I'm disappearing? Sick
Also thanks for the fulsome explanation. I've heard some of that developmental stuff before but yeah was mulling things over and decided to post about it
It’s the baby first learning play. It’s funny because it’s supposed to be funny. They are picking up on the social cues that this is a funny game. Or rather, they're laughing and smiling because you're laughing and smiling.
