Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

thoughts on Tempest Rising so far:

why tf do game devs make the design choice not to base camera panning around WASD? I'm controlling shit with my mouse, I can't pan the screen while selecting and doing shit, SO my choice is to have my left hand in this weird ass position on the arrow keys? what IS that

they really should have just gone whole hog on the command and conquer camp, just ham this shit up, like, they fucked up wasting time and money on CG characters for cut scenes and shit. Why? they should have just hired like, a local community college acting class, given them some ridiculous lines and costumes, and just play it up. People don't reference Tim Curry escaping TO SPACE decades because it was Good Acting, but I promise nobody is gonna be meming on these nerds

anyway I lost during the first mission so I might have more thoughts later

"how could you lose during the FIRST mission? what are you, a noob" yes literally it was my first time playing but also, I dunno man, the GDI kept sending tanks and shit at me while I just have a fucking barracks, I accidentally forgot to hit the repair button on the one turret I had so woops, and then when all my dudes died, like, again, one barracks can't out produce all the free shit thrown at me

it was kind of hilarious though because right when I'm overwhelmed the game is like "Aight, bet, you got that tempest, now get the hell out of there- your technicians can repair your refinery on the move!" and i'm like, lol, what technicians, game??

then I couldn't even figure out how to fucking unpack the refinery, like, I think I figured it out right as it blew up but it's some weird shit to have a recall drone button and then a "dismantle refinery" button, but ALSO have the cursor icon change to like, that packing/unpacking sort of thing the construction yards had in C&C/Red Alert? so I kept fucking clicking on it and it was doing nothing and then game over

maybe I shouldn't have chosen hard difficulty idk
