I do not know, why they mock this. I literately make the same move when i read something. Its called concentrating and focusing.

It probably replaces random, potentially distracting background noises, with something well known and predictable, thus not as distracting.

Can you focus while listening to music you never heard before?

It drowns out the voices in my head so they stopped distracting me with their ramblings.

Better have a single external source I can filter out instead of multiple internal I can"t.

Also if you do hit or scrape something, you are aware of it faster. It's how you minimize damage if it happens. Or you can scrape the whole side of the car because you don't hear metal scratching over your fave music.
