There's a theory, and I think it fits far too well to not be the actual plot, that Mulholland Drives story is about an actress that was forced to use the casting couch (which seems to be what Oprah and Rita are sitting on) in order to get roles.
Im not going to try to remember all the points, cuz my memory sucks, but it's basically her regret and shame of using the couch method, and then watching other younger stars get better roles, who probably did the same thing.
