"Escapism" oh please.
HOI players are playing for escapism too, but there's a reason half the community are fascists while the other half are communists. The fantasy that players are choosing to play for their "escapism" directly lines up with what they are.
I think this true, but only for a smaller subset of players. My Stellaris empires have ranged the full spectrum of communist utopian to slavery and genocidal exterminators. Similarly for my many Vicky playthroughs.
