I was horrified, after I took a #macro #photography and saw that my "clean" finger was filled with #swarf #particles imbedded in the #fingerprint after 3 hours of just teaching in a #machineshop that day.

It’s because they’re not posting via Lemmy; They’re posting via Pixelfed, which is something more akin to a federated version of Instagram. They @ the relevant community or users to make posts/responses; notice the “@pics@lemmy.world” in their post. This is also why you’ll sometimes see comments begin with an “@{username}” of whoever they’re responding to. On Lemmy’s end it looks out of place, but on their end it looks more like an Instagram comments section, where @‘ing people is necessary to be able to follow the comment thread.

It’s one of the odd quirks of federation that can be difficult to wrap your head around when you’re accustomed to every single social media site acting like a walled garden… Federated posts are able to federate not only to different Lemmy instances, but to entirely different platforms.

So no, it may not be fucking tumblr, but for them it is fucking Instagram.

Are those specific instances that are federated in (that can be separately blocked, like people do with .ml)? Or is it just another access point for any given instance?

I'm aware. Still fucking hate it. I hate Instagram, too.

At the expense of this kind of garbage? Then no.

I'd be happy with being able to choose to opt out, or ideally opt in.

I don't like being forced into a platform that I don't want to use. I don't use Instagram, Tumblr, etc. for a reason.

[–] drkt@scribe.disroot.org 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

but you can

Go to an instance that doesn't federate with those other instances you don't like, or run your own and do whatever you want.

~~Where do I find this list of what instances are federated? That doesn't exist? Oh well that's not useful is it?~~*

Requiring someone to sift through each instance in the hopes of finding one that happens to not federate with these kinds of platforms is an unreasonable suggestion.†

Run my own instance? Fuck off with that. I don't have the time.

Your 'solutions' are not real solutions. It's a cop-out of accepting the fact this is a limitation of Lemmy and the federation system that all these are based on.

*edit: This does exist, apparently. Though I have no idea where a person is supposed to find that page on their own. I've looked for this before multiple times.

†Added point after being shown the list exists.

Where do I find this list of what instances are federated?

https://lemmy.world/instances

Why are you so hostile?

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

Oh wow. That's useful. Thanks for that. I had no idea that page existed. I've looked for this before and even looked again before my last comment. Where is that even found? Lemmy can be frustrating.

Why are you so hostile?

Because your suggestions are rude and that seems intentional.

Your suggestions require a preposterous amount of effort for something that is best solved by letting the user block this kind of content, like being able to block domains or content federated from certain platforms. Even with this useful page, having to pour through the giant list for every possible instance to maybe find one that doesn't federate from those platforms, but then who knows what else I'd be sacrificing for that one thing. That's not a useful suggestion by any stretch. Suggesting running an instance is also a ridiculous answer as a solution that requires a significant amount of time, some extra resources, and then a continuous amount of time for maintenance.

You're not far off from just saying "Just don't use the internet. Problem solved!" Do you see why making suggestions that are ridiculous to 'solve' a proportionally smaller problem is rude?

Bro getting so angry over something so meaningless. Touch grass.

[–] drkt@scribe.disroot.org 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

You have a strangely visceral reaction to seeing a hashtag, man. I can't solve that for you.
For the record, you can block entire instances from your user account.
Basically every tool you've asked for so far has been available for at least a year now.

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 1 points 49 minutes ago

I just said I wish I could block it. My "visceral reaction" has only been to your unhelpful "suggestions."

No, Lemmy does not have the available tools to accommodate. Blocking an instance would not prevent this sort of thing since it was posted to this community.

You're not helping and just being antagonistic, whether or not that is your intent. Thanks for the link to the instances page, though it's not helpful for this situation it's still nice to know it's available.
