I think he meant: "let's hope Russia doesn't succeed in Ukraine and then goes to Moldova"
In an alternate timeline, if after Crimea Putin had gone for Odessa and then Moldova instead of Kiev, it would still be business as usual with Russia and we'd be debating whether he's really a bad guy.
