There was a wave of tankie on Reddit and here during the reddexit. It was like, “where the fuck did stalin/mao/pol pot loving, atrocity denying weirdos come from en masse?” But you’re right the shock was bigger than the phenomenon.

It’s worth remembering when pol pot was offered access to the entire library of the cpc he just said “nah, I got this”.

Turning down the chance to read some dry, boring books on political economy is about the least communist thing a person can do. It’s only beaten by arguing about that shit and making a split when the argument gets heated.
