I suspect the second will feel improved when the third comes out to finish the conclusion. It's hard to end a movie on a cliffhanger like that.
I do agree with you, though. I like the first one better and it does feel like a tighter story. Also an amazing opening sequence that just pulls you right into the world (and is a great home audio test).
But I have no doubt that when I see the third film I'll likely appreciate the second more.
