To this day I'm still afraid to orient my consoles in a vertical position, all thanks to the Xbox 360.
Its fine honestly better for air flow as hot air rises. Just don't restrict air flow and you will be fine in any position.
Did that cause issues on the 360? I'm not a console gamer myself
Turning it on cause issues with the 360.
Basically the problem was they used some kind of substandard solder that wasn't rated for the temperatures the 360 got to. So it would invariably crack which would cause the traces to become disconnected.
If you then turned it on its side the traces completely fell off the board and then you had a dead 360. As long as you left it flat the traces would just stay in the same place and when you next turned on the 360 it would remelt the solder and a kind of repair itself, until the next time the solder cracked.
But even then it wasn't reliable, because if you knocked it then the solder pads wouldn't line up anymore and you'd have the same issue.
I think I went through about 5 before I finally got one which didn't have the defect.
The main air intake was on the bottom of the console (when in a vertical position), so you were restricting airflow unless you placed it horizontally.
