You gotta be in-fucking-sane to attempt the tenure track these days. So much more time & money in industry.

Or go tenure-track in educational institutions rather than research institutions. I left my PhD program with an "all but dissertation" MS and immediately got a few adjunct jobs teaching at a small private university and a community college. A few years later, I wound up full-time with tenure at the CC, and I couldn't be happier with the decision to leave research.

100%. It’s absolutely brutal right now. So glad I left academia for industry, they pay you more and you work less. Too bad I did two post docs first. Like, why the hell would I fight and claw for R01s when I could just like, NOT DO THAT.
