This is the best summary I could come up with:

Right now, there's something big spinning off the coast from Sydney — a giant rotating vortex of sea water, powerful enough to dominate the ocean currents off south-eastern Australia.

Our new research demonstrates the link between a warm ocean eddy and a record-breaking marine heatwave which struck off Sydney from December 2021 to February 2022.

Our estimates suggest this 400km wide beast holds 30 per cent more heat than normal for this part of the ocean.

Our trip on the research vessel RV Investigator made it possible for us to grasp how this powerful current was behaving — in three dimensions.

While they hold heat a long time, eventually it's lost to the atmosphere and through mixing at the edges of the current.

If it moves towards the coast, where marine life is concentrated, we will see water temperatures spike — and possibly, underwater disaster for many species.

What is geoscience?

Geoscience (also called Earth Science) is the study of Earth. Geoscience includes so much more than rocks and volcanoes, it studies the processes that form and shape Earth's surface, the natural resources we use, and how water and ecosystems are interconnected. Geoscience uses tools and techniques from other science fields as well, such as chemistry, physics, biology, and math! Read more...
