This is not so much 'more cars' as it is 'less cars plunging into rivers during a bridge collapse.'
I can only speak for my local Bridge ….. they want to replace the old Sagamore bridge to get the same number of lanes. Replace the WPA project from 1935 with a modern one. Replace two extra narrow lanes with no breakdown with lanes that meet code. Replace opposing traffic right next to each other with a median. Replace a bicycle path on sidewalk with a separate bike path. Replace a low speed limit bridge with the same speed limit as the roads it joins.
Most importantly replace the common summertime traffic report of “40+ mile backup to the Sagamore Bridge” with …. Much less
It’ll be helluva safer and a huge win for the environment by easing the legendary traffic jams
Dont think theres gonna be any lanes added?
How do you add lanes when you repair a bridge?
Theyre completely replacing bridges https://wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-interstate-bridge-replacement-program
One state is replacing a bridge and it was clearly planned before this $5 billion.
This bridge is specifically named in the article we're commenting on it is part of the 5 billion, along with multiple other bridges being replaced, one for over 1 billion alone, with stated goals of increasing capacity and improving traffic congestion.
