Please don’t fucking touch anything to do with Linux Musk. Please.

Crazy, rich South Africans is how we got Ubuntu

[-] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 65 points 5 months ago

But would you like to upgrade to Ubuntu pro?

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 17 points 5 months ago

Ubuntu pro is not at all a bad thing. It's free to consumers but you can also just ignore it if you don't need it.

The ssh prompt? I think you just need to mess with the files in /etc/update-motd.d

[-] Technoguyfication@sh.itjust.works 8 points 5 months ago

The prompt on the desktop that says there and pending updates that can only be installed with Pro.

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I've been using Ubuntu for about 3, years now on the desktop and I don't know what you're talking about. Where exactly is that prompt? And they're not hiding updates behind pro, it's just extra on top of the updates you'd get on other distros.

It is for up to 5 devices, so small-scale homelab stuff can be covered without cost.

[-] ichbinjasokreativ@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Does what? Sign up for ubuntu pro? For that you just need to go to their website and register. For the homelab stuff you could start small - maybe a linux nas with a few VMs for a pihole or something.

Ubuntu is a gateway drug to Arch.

[-] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago

And arch is a gateway drug to NixOS or gentoo

Select your drug now

[-] joyjoy@lemm.ee 7 points 5 months ago

I smoke my Linux with a filter.

[-] reev@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 months ago

Ah, a Zorin user

[-] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 4 points 5 months ago

I have selected Fedora. Where did I go wrong?

[-] psmgx@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Something something IBM something

[-] Opisek@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I'm an Arch user flirting with the idea of NixOS. Is it too late to save me?

[-] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

Hes to far gone SMH

I ran nix for awhile and it was super stable, i just kinda got bored of using it. I know its really powerful with nixpills and flakes.

Funny Gentoo actually was my gateway to arch. Loved the customizability of Gentoo and the rolling release model.

But building Chrome and Firefox (I needed both for work reasons sometimes) every update was the nail in the coffin. Switched to Arch and didn't miss a thing.

[-] rwhitisissle@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

It's also how we got snap packages and apartheid, and I'm not even sure which of those is worse. (yes, I'm joking)

[-] Sunny@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 months ago

Could you elaborate on this for those of us who don't know the context?

[-] dustyData@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

Canonical, the company that is responsible for Ubuntu, was founded by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth to sell B2B Linux tech support.

[-] Sunny@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 months ago

Aha thanks for letting me know 👍

Par for the course

[-] palordrolap@kbin.social 28 points 5 months ago

Linux Musk sounds like the evil counterpart to Mint. A fork of Red Star OS, etc.

[-] foofiepie@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Linux Musk Cinnamon. Yours for a modest subscription.

[-] nemith@programming.dev 1 points 5 months ago
